help on deciphering occupation!!!

Hi there

the following was on the death certificate of a man i am researching.

any ideas what it says?????
Geen - Glamorgan/Devon/Birmingham
Lewis - Glamorgan/Monmouthshire
Cutter - Co Durham/Northumberland/Yorkshire
Hunter - Co Durham/Northumberland/Yorkshire
Siveter/Siviter - Birmingham

Looks to me like it would just be "Merchant"

None of the 'i's are dotted so the mark above is just that, a mark and not related to the letter, and the final 'e' in White (in the Color or Race box) or the 'e' in 'Sept' have no distinguishable loop.

Think it says Merchant.

Yep, merchant was my first thought.
Reynolds, Woodham, Payne, Wilmott, Hart, Richardson, Packwood, Tandy, Dexter - Bedfordshire.
Chamberlain and Wagstaff- Hunts.
Freeman, Cheney, Cox- Northants.
Burns, Muter, Cobban, Hossack, Strachan, Moonlight.
Lanarkshire, Ross and Cromarty and Kincardineshire.
Garvey- Ireland.

I also can only think that it could be merchant.

I have a freind and when he doesn't know how to spell a word correctly, he makes his handwriting really scruffy so that no-one can tell - I think the people at the records offices had the same idea.
