Midwives and Nurses
« on: Tuesday 12 October 04 03:04 BST (UK) »
Hi There:  How would I go about finding information on my grandmother's sister who was either a midwife or a nurse.  This would likely be in the late 1890s or early 1900s  I know that she married in 1903 and was born in 1875.  Any help much appreciated, Alva

Alva - not sure exactly what info you are looking for - have you found this lady in 1901 census ?

The PRO (National Archive) and the Wellcome Inst for the History of Medicine have compiled a computerised data base of the location in records offices of the records for over 1,000 civilian hospitals in England and Wales.  If you want to find the records of a particular hospital you can look at the HOSPREC database at Kew.
Hope this helps

Hi Suey:  No I have not found this aunt in the 1901 census but I know she was married in 1903.  Her name was Caroline Hart and she married William Burren in June 1903 Quarter.  She had two children that I know of, a William and a Winnifred.  Winnifred (Winnie) also became a nurse or midwife and I believe she never married.  Caroline was one of 10 children and I am trying to trace their lives.  Since her sister, my grandmother, was the only family member to come to Canada and no one came to visit I am at a loss for information.  Any suggestions much appreciated, Alva in British Columbia

Hi Moscan:  Thank you for the offer.  The last  census I had for Caroline Hart was 1891.  Still with her parents Henry and Elizabeth, the address was the 121 Layton Road in West Ham.  In 1901 she was no longer at home and the family was at 1 Dersingham Avenue, civil parish was East Ham,Essex.  I found the 1901 census when we had a chance to use the free trials site.  Unfortunatley I never got the chance to look up Caroline before the site was shut down.  Any info wuld be much appreciated, Alva

Hi Serena:  Thank you for your note.  I had not found any further information on Caroline Hart.  This sounds like it could be her.  She would be 25 years old in 1901.  According to the 1881 census she was born in Middlesex, in the 1891 census it has her listed as born in Bethnal Green.  Any further information would be much appreciated.  She married in 1903 to William Burren but that wouldn't apply here.  Thanks again,
Alva

hi

she is listed as caroline m. hart born in battle, sussex and is working as a servant in st. mary magdalene, sussex.(63 everfieldplace , st. mary magdalene, hastings, sussex)

it looks like she was a 'cork' domestic but not sure as writing a bit dodgy!

all the other caroline harts (3) were all married!

thanks serena
