Hi lynng,

What in particular did you want to find out?
We (the Rootschat family!) have a Renwick photo on our Victorian photos website:
   http://victorian-photos.rootschat.net/page9/page5/files/page5-1027-full.html
...but a Google search doesn't bring up very much more than that  :-\

Hi Prue

thanks for the reply.

I have a photograph of my gg grandfather taken at this studio. The date pencilled on the back is 1881, but I am uncertain of this, as I have him on the 1891 census in Burton on Trent.

I wondered if the studio was still in existence, as I'd like to find out more about the details of the photo.

Regards

Lynn

Hi Lynn,
I very much doubt whether the studio is still around, unfortunately.
You could check to see whether you can find it in some directories though - have you looked at
www.historicaldirectories.org ?

Brett Payne has a section of his web site dedicated to Derbyshire Photographers. You can find him at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brett/photos/dbyphotos.html

I have no doubt he would like to hear from you if he does not list Renwick

Hi Lynn,

Burton-upon-Trent is actually in Staffordshire, and is therefore not covered by my web site.  However, I'd be happy to have a look at your photograph and estimate a date for it.  I have seen various George Renwick photos before - in fact, I have a carte de visite of my gg-aunt Sarah Payne nee Parker (1870-1946) taken in the late 1880s, when she was probably in service nearby.

Mike Harbach's GENUKI Staffordshire Photographers' Index shows George Renwick to have been operating a studio at 20 Station Street, Burton in 1880, 1896 and 1900, after which he moved to 4 Bank Square by 1912.

If you would like to send me detailed full colour scans (at 300 dpi) of both the front and reverse of the photo, including the full extent of the mount, saved as JPG files, I can probably narrow down the date at least to within 3 or 4 years.

By the way, Prue, the Renwick photo on your Victorian Photos (Rootschat) site I would estimate was taken in the early 1880s.

Regards and best wishes,

Hi

I live in Burton and I can clarify that this photographers is no longer around, just to make sure I have checked in the yellow pages and they are not listed.

Hi, according to RPS list George Renwick was at 105 New Street in 1876, in 20 Station Street 1880-1905, 4 Bank Square in 1912 and 6 Bank Square in 1916.  Bad news is he did not usually put his full address on his card mounts.  Good news is you can tell approx dates from the number of medals publicised on the mount and also from the negative reference numbers.. For a more accurate date, post an image of the BACK of the card.  Ron Cosens

Hi Ron,

Can you provide a date this one from the design on the reverse or the medals, please?  It's from Pru's Rootschat collection, and will in due course appear on my Derbyshire pages as George Renwick was for many years the photographer of choice for many in South Derbyshire.  My tentative estimate from the style of portrait and clothing fashion on the front is late 1870s, but I'm happy to stand corrected.

Regards and best wishes, Brett
