St Bridget's Bevington Bush 1941 Scotland Rd Liverpool
« on: Monday 17 April 06 00:19 BST (UK) »
My late mother-in-law lost her mother age42 and youngest brother aged18mths in a bombing of the above church in may blitz 1941, just wondering if anyone knows of a list of fatalities for this incident, or if the was a rememberence plaque to the dead and injured. If any newspapers reported this or was the so much going on at the time that it would not be considered newsworthy.

Hi Sharon
Did you ever get any further information about the bombing of St.Bridget's?
I've just found out a relative of mine, Thomas Allen aged 20, was also a fatality in the church as well.
Your posting came up after I did a general internet search.
Thanks
Tony

Hiya Tony and thanks for your interest, the only thing i learned about my relatives is that they are listed on war graves website as civilian war dead it gives you a little certificate to print out and gives their address and who they were belonging to ie; wife of.... and son of..... it may help you if you need addresses mine was in Victoria Square. Shame i never found this out whilst my mother in law was alive as she would of loved to had the certificate.

Have you found any newspaper reports or stuff like that?

Hiya Tony the website is http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

I have searched the site with the name given but only turned up one result and the name was John Joseph Allen of 35 Gardners Row age 12  died 3/5/1941  which was the same date as mine, and a few other Allen's but wrong date Nov 1940 however have a try i couldnt find mine at my first few attempts so try different spellings, Good Luck and keep me informed how you get on.

Sorry no memorial plaques that i know of, the is one on Vauxhall Rd but that is for Blackstock Gardens

Best Wishes
Sharon

Hi Sharon
your reply made me question the information I had. I think the moral of the story is if other members of the family give you information, take the seed of the story but don't accept the full tree off them. (Does that sound right - I've had a terrible day at work and my head is frazzled :'( >:().
Anyway, not finding Thomas Allen aged 20 bombed in St.Bridgets, I went through 10 years of BMD to find a matching Allen birth with a mother Lennon. No Thomas but I did find John J. Allen b.Apr-Jun 1929 mother Lennon. So I wasn't entirely misinformed by the family member.
Sadly, the story I had is that there were no remains found to be buried - so I was  surprised to see on the CWGC cert. that he died in Mill St. Hospital.
I'll keep looking for info. on this. I'd like to know what time of day it was, whether it was during mass or if there was a bomb shelter in the church and how many others died. Also where was mum and dad?
I'll keep you up to date with my findings Sharon. You've been a great help. :) Thanks again.

Hiya Toe,

So the John Joseph was yours, I am glad if you know what i mean, Did'nt realise he was a Lennon from the Lennon posts on Liverpool and S.W.Lancs posts.

I was told they were there  sheltering from the air raid, could'nt understand how mum was there with babe in arm's and where was the other 6 children because luckily they survived ?.

Headache myself and got a night shift ahead of me !!

Keep me posted please if you find out anything else.

Whooa Sharon
don't go to work without answering this ...
are the six children you are talking about Allen children or your own family?
It would be bad enough me losing one relative and gaining another but to find another six!!!!
I've since had another theory that there was also a Thomas Allen there but if there were no remains they mightn't have registered him properly as being there.

Yes that's me and my Lennons from Liverpool and SW.
Thanks

Tony

Tony  dont panic they are my 6 not yours :) My mother-in-law  was the eldest of 7 and her mother Elizabeth Lilley and youngest bro Frances Lilley  both lost their lives here. I wonder how many lost their lives on this awful date.
