Need Help Ruthwell
« on: Monday 17 April 06 09:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out if the following people are brothers.

Robert Gunnion circa 1740 Ruthwell Drumfries
and
George Gunnion crica 1745 Ruthwell Drumfries

Robert is my 6th Great grandfather I have got back to him but cannot find who his parents were or any siblings.

I believe that George is buried along side Roberts wife Mary Gunnion nee Morpath and son James Gunnion in the Kirkyard at Ruthwell which makes me think there is a relationship between Robert and George.

Thanking any help in advance

Hiya Hudggy,

I'm not wholly familiar with Ruthwell records but it looks like the parochial records for births start in 1723.  Often these earlier records are patchy, naturally they had longer to survive before centralisation.

Have you looked at Scotlandspeople to see if there are many occurrences of the name in the parish?

If there are more than one family having children at that time and in the next 10-20 years then there is too much doubt but if there only seems to be one family then it starts to look better.

Have you found any wills? For this family?  It can help to pinpoint relationships.

All the best,
Pam

Aah that's a shame having a couple of families - probably related but it's hard to divine how.  SP is about as complete an index as there is so that far back records maybe lost.

Wills are available on SP you can search them for free and you get a little bit of info regarding occupation, name, location, date of death etc so you don't pay for a will that isn't related.

In Scotland the eldest son inherits everything by right so many families didn't do wills but I have a few from unmarried uncles/aunts and cousins of my descendents that have helped.

Hi Pam,

I went onto SP there is only one will for the Gunnions in Dumfries but I dont think I am ready to fork out £5.00 for it of my meager funds. Try for it later when I am a wee bit better off.

Hi Hudggy,

Just read your message - I live in Ruthwell - can nip over to the graveyard and have a look at the stones for you - if you think it will help.  A ::)lso the Savings Bank museum in Ruthwell have some records on all those who saved with them, although I'm not sure when they start.
