Charles Bailey Newtown Hants
« on: Tuesday 18 April 06 00:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I've got really stuck on trying to find out who the parents of a Charles Bailey born c1812 in Hampshire are.
I have a feeling that they could be a James Bailey and Sarah Bates, that married in 1805, Newtown ( nr Newbury ).
Charles married a Caroline Stroud ( Father Thomas Stroud, mother could've been a Hannah Bailey, as that couple married in 1800 in Newtown ).
Charles died in June 1846, at the Harrow Inn, Newtown, and Caroline remarried, 3 months later.
I've been hitting my head against a brick wall regarding the Baileys, as there were quite a lot from the Newtown area, but none of the ones I have found on one website, are on the LDS IGI.
I don't know if Charles was actually born in the Newtown area, but it seems more than likely. I have an inkling that he and Caroline could've been cousins.
I think I've dried up all resources now, and don't know where to turn now.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Newtown is a small place on the Hampshire/Berkshire border - Newbury Berkshire is closeby. My Phillimore Atlas and index of parish registers says the parish registers are not on the IGI but marriages are on Pallots marriage index.
The marriage in 1805 in Newtown on the IGI was not taken from parish registers but was submitted by a church member.
The 1800 marriage according to Pallots marriage index gives Hannah Bailey's residence as the adjacent parish of Burghclere.
Deposited registers will be at Hampshire Record office.
Hampshire Genealogy Society have countywide indexes for marriages and burials (the latter on CD) up to 1837 and at present baptisms 1813-1837 (also on CD).

Hi Valda,

Thanks for your help. Was thinking about joining the Hampshire FHS, but wasn't sure if I would benefit from it. It's really awkward when you don't live anywhere near where you're researching. It's a long way to go, when you don't know for definate if the information you require is available.
Interesting to know that Hannah Bailey was registered in Burghclere. According to the census's, Caroline, Thomas Stroud's daughter, was from Highclere.
I couldn't find info on the Pallots either, that I have access to. That maybe because it may not be all inscribed yet.

The majority of Hampshire parishes have no coverage on the IGI. Best estimate for some coverage (if only of marriages for some periods) is about 43% of all Hampshire parishes. Burghclere and Highclere according to Phillimore's atlas have no IGI coverage (though the IGI has incorporated Phillimore's published marriage indexes of many Hampshire parishes so you may get some coverage through that source but nothing else).
If you rely on the IGI for Hampshire parishes then certainly for baptisms many more will not show on the IGI than will.

Sorry I'm not sure what would assist you at Newbury? Hampshire parish records (other than Southampton or Portsmouth parishes and there would be copies on microfiche of these parishes) are deposited at Winchester where Hampshire Record Office is. Berkshire parish records are deposited at Reading where Berkshire Record Office is. Similarly for other churches in other counties. Nearly all churches have deposited their old registers. For the few that have not, you would have to write to the vicar and arrange a time for viewing the records, ususally when the church is not needed e.g. for funerals etc and somebody is available to supervise you.
To visit a record office you need proof of who you are and your address e.g. a driving licence will enable you to obtain a county record office card.
