address in Hastings
« on: Thursday 14 October 04 08:11 BST (UK) »
Hello.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the address 34 Wellington Square in Hastings, I have found out that my 2x Great Grandfather Abraham Moon was living there at the time of his death 7 Nov 1932. I was unaware that he had ever moved away from Rye. His wife Mary Jane died a few months before him 2 May 1932 in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.  I was curious as to whether this was a home or possibly some type of nursing home or medical facility. Thanks.

Hi Talkin

Wellington square was the most fashionable part of town to live in, a lot of the houses there had their own ballroom.

It is now mostly taken over by the Council for various departments on one side and solicitors etc on the other, with remaining houses turned into flats.

Will do a bit of digging for you to see what No 34 was / now is

PS - In 1851 it was a very well to do famly named Greenside who were 'Proprieter of Houses' & 'Fundholders'  from London who had loads of servants

Hi again

34 Wellington Square, Hastings

Looking through Street Directories and Census, I have found out that :-

In 1854 it was Residence of John Greenside Esq, Gentry
In 1855 it was residence of Rev H S Foyster
In 1862 it was the Private Residence of Mrs Close
In 1880 it was residence of Stephen Hodson, Income from Property & Houses
In 1881 it was a Lodging House - prop W G Judge

I am working my way up to 1932
