Working a horse too hard??

My Great grandfather Joseph Battrick b.1869 and his son Herbert Frank Battrick b.1904 travelled to Australia with the view to setting up home and then bringing their family out. Unfortunately they were working for a Jewish Landowner when they were imprisoned for working a horse too hard. At some point after that they decided that life down under was not for them and returned to Dorset where Herbert Frank was known as 'Bush' for the rest of his days.......
.......or so the story goes........

This is all I know of my horse hating family's brush with Australia but would be absolutely delighted if someone could back this up with facts or maybe point me in the right direction.

Do you know the year or Australian state of arrival?

If you check these people on the National Archives of Australia site they may turn out to be related, which will give you a starting point, they both enlisted in NSW.

William Thomas Battrick b30 Dec 1894 Studland Eng NOK- Amelia
Arthur John Battrick b16 Jan 1897 Studland Dorset NOK- Kathleen

Arthur John BATTRICK was the son of Matthew Thomas BATTRICK and Anne HART and died in Frankston Vic in 1977 aged 80.

An interesting story
you would have to assume?
that when jospeh and frank travelled to oz it would no doubt have been  around the 1920"S  if frank was born in 1904

did he leave a wife and others behind?

did he have any mor children when he returned to england this could give an idea of how long he was here

He must have returned by 1937, when my father was born. Probably some time before that. Frank that is, as far as I know it was a short and fairly unsuccessful trip, it would be interesting to find any prison reports.

yes ken a police report but witout a state it will be bloody hard and probably too soon for details to be out there
newspapers might carry the story but once again would need a place.
