Marrige look up pre 1832 please for Dover

Hi everyone
today i received a long waited for certificate of one of my relations.

David Ellen born 18/2/1842. St Marys parish dover

his fathers name is listed as Michael Ellen  Laborer. Living as far as i can make out Commercial way???

his mothers name is listed as Charlotte formally hubband. This is where it gets confusing as the lettering is not clear to read her maiden name.

On the 1841 census they are listed
As Michael b. 1781 He is listed as a mariner
Charlotte b. 1811
Living in the parish of st Marys
Still at commercial way

their youngest child listed is Edward b. 1832

If anyone can locate the date and location  of the marriage and confirm Charlottes maiden name for me I would be very grateful

Hi there!

Been having a look for the marriage, but no luck so far.

In the meantime, I suspect you don't have the full transcription because Edward was neither the youngest nor the eldest.  Additionally, I'm fairly sure that Michael was 40 - not 60!

If we assume that William was their eldest son, it might be useful to find his baptism record or find him in a later Census.  With his place of birth, there's a better chance of locating his parent's marriage.

Another side track ...

It appears that Charlotte died between 1841 and 1851.  Here's the family in the Workhouse ...

Sarah Ellen, mar, 34, wife, born Hougham Kent

If this is (was) your David's family, where were the others - and where was David himself?

You say that Charlotte's surname is hard to read - do you mean "HUBBAND" or is there another surname?

Thank you for the information so far
David Ellen was not born till Feb 1842 so did not appear on the 1841 census.

On the 1851 census he is with his aunt and uncle Alice and George Ellen in whitfield

sorry about the mix up on the oldest child.
I have located several William Ellens so far.
As far as I can find out Charlotte died sept 1842 quarter

Michael was in buckland work house in 1851 and 1861

As to Charlotte's maiden name it could be Hubbard.
i will attempt to scan it in and place it on the next message.

Have posted a copy of David ellens birth certificate in the common room so you can see how the Mothers maiden name is written.

Have located the marrige in Buckland church records Dover as follows
15 july 1827
Michael Ellen bachelor of this parish and charlotte Hubbard spinster of st Mary dover by banns
Michael signed (x), witnessed by George Ellen (x) and Richard Langley

Many Many thanks for your help. Off to try and find Michaels Parents william and Eliza???
