Tanney in Ireland
« on: Saturday 22 April 06 23:28 BST (UK) »
Does the name Tanney originate in any particular county? My gr gr grandparent are on the 1881 census in England and state their birthplace as just 'Ireland'. I have no idea where to start looking.

Hi Audrey

This is what I've got relating to the Tanney's in my family. In the 1881 census:

John Tanney age 56 born Ireland
Elizabeth Tanney age 51 born Ireland.
Mary Tanney age 17 born Cowpen, Northumberland Daughter
Patrick Tanney age 15 born ditto son
John Tanney age 11    born ditto son
Henry Tanney age 5    born ditto - grandson

They were apparently Catholic but we do not know whether they came from Northern or Southern Ireland.

hi Tessy
there is not many but what there is all appears to be connected Tyrone seems to be where they are mostly and as your John is a bit early for my records I am going off the name of his children

TANNEY, Eliza

   born   12 Jun 1865      613, Clonavaddy
             Tyrone, Ireland

   Fath.   Patrick TANNEY
   Moth.   Ann MCCALLEN

there is also a a large family

ANNY, Sarah Ann   Bir   1867   Irel   Tyro

TANNY, Margaret   Bir   1868   Irel   Tyro

TANNY, Esther   Bir   1870   Irel   Tyro

TANNY, Bridget   Bir   1872   Irel   Tyro all born to
Fa:   John TANNY
Mo:   Esther RAFFERTY
I suspect may be connected to me my Rafferty's left Ireland around 1850 and travelled to the north east they were also R.C.

Hi Audrey

Thanks for that but I'm a bit confused - Are you looking at John's wife Elizabeth as this Eliza? Wouldn't she have a different surname at birth? Or am I getting the complete wrong end of the stick? It may be too early in the morning for me!!

I looked for a marriage for your John & Elizabeth to find her maiden name but couldn't  so all I had left was John which I don't have either so I used the names of Johns children as the Irish use the same Christian names in there family's and I came up with what I posted you can use this info as there is few records left
Clonavaddy Tyrone to see if you can find them on census not easy I might add try this link

I suggest you ask for 1871 census lookup for Northumberland  you might even find them on 1861 and they could have married England if you got the marriage cert it would give you the name of Johns father  I am going to look through my Rafferty records and see if I can find out anything about this Tanny /Rafferty connection

I have had a look through the 1881 census and there is at least four different  families of Tanney  there  looking at the names of the children in each family I would say they are all related and they are all living in the same area Cowpen I  can also see the connection with the one I sent for Tanny/Rafferty I will send a copy by PM so I would say the Tyrone area is correct sorry this is long winded but this is the only way Irish searches work for me with so little records to work on
