dumfries parish records
« on: Wednesday 26 April 06 12:33 BST (UK) »
I am new to Scottish research with an interest in Dumfries before 1837 - TODD.
How does one go about finding the church and/or parish records and accessing them from outside Scotland?
Are there any sites with good explanations?

I found John TODD clockmaker 48, wife Agnes 48 and family at Queensberry St Dumfries in 1841.  I know John was dead by 1853 when Dau Agnes married in Liverpool.

I would like to find their marriage - about 1814+ish?? [going on ages] and/or the births of children who survived - John about 1821, William James Thomas Agnes about 1831, for starters - but - don't know church names or if these are available anyway.

As yet I don't know why Dau Agnes went to Liverpool with her mother - after death of John?? - but assume that the Bros stayed in Dumfries - but haven't followed this as yet.

Hi penshurst

Have you looked at this thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,8864.0.html

A number of links Dumfries on there.

Have you looked at the IGI, available to search free at:

http://www.familysearch.org

It is not complete but may be of assistance.  It is supposed to have all Scottish OPR births/baptisms and marriages there.

Also the official Scottish site for records:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It is pay per view but if you read the instructions and advice on how to get the most out of it carefully, it can be very useful.

On the IGI I found:

John Todd married Agnes McKeand 5 May 1816
(NB this is a member submitted record rather than extracted so should be treated with a little more caution)

A birth shows up in Kirkcudbright in 1816 for an Isabella (26 Sep 1816) - this is an extracted record.

Don't know if that helps.

Nell

I can't believe I'm gaining information about a family line I thought would be my brick wall forever.  The John TODD in 1851 is the wrong age methinks.

Audrey - Did you see an Agnes TODD about 58 and daughter Agnes about 19 on the 1851 census?  -   perhaps with a couple of sons still at home.

I feel a little more confident about approaching the Scotland site now.

Thank you both.

I find this thread interesting because of a few similarities with one of my collateral ancestors.

I have an Adam Burgess b. 1811, clockmaker, in High St (west side), Dumfries in the 1841. He reappears in Gatehouse of Fleet- travelling from Castle Douglas - in 1851 but from the birthplaces of his children he was in Liverpool in the intervening years. The family then move to Liverpool by 1861.

Wonder if there is any connection whatsoever?

I found this entry on 1841 FreeCen. He's the only John Todd Clockmaker showing in all FreeCen! By chance, the age would fit the John in the 1851 census in Dumfries:

Milne George 45 England
Milne Agness 35 Outside Census County 1841
Todd John 40 Clock Maker Outside Census County 1841
Leneive Agness 5 England
Wetherly Jane 15 Female Servant Renfrewshire

Address: Ashton, Inverkip-Renfrewshire

In respect of an IGI parent search for John Todd and Agnes McKeand, there are six children showing, all submitted entries:

1. JAMES TODD  Birth: 1827 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
2. WILLIAM TODD Birth: 20 JAN 1825/Christening: 23 JAN 1825 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
3. MARGARET CHISHOLM TODD Birth: 06 AUG 1822/Christening: 13 AUG 1822 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
4. JOHN TODD Birth: 1821 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
5. THOMAS TODD Birth: 1831 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
6. AGNES TODD Birth: 1832 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland

Regards.

Monica
