GERMANY: Desperately Seeking Scharpey
« on: Thursday 27 April 06 00:21 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace birth records for my maternal Great Grandmother.  She was born in Germany on the 18th October 1901.  Her name was Gertrude Scharpey and she married William Daltrey in 1921 in Portsmouth. He was in the RN.

A bit of a long story this one - we thought she had died in child birth in 1923 but in fact had seemingly left (or had to leave) my grandfather with two very young sons.  She actually died in 1995.    We have only just found out.

I think she may originate from Westfalen as Scharpey is a very uncommon name and the three or four I have traced are in Essen and Bochum etc.

Need help!!

Sarah ???

Yes that's him - I already have them.  Sadly no info. on Gertrude on them.  We may now have a picture of her supplied by the my great-grandfathers step-grandaughter (I said it was a long story!)  She died in a nursing home in Portsmouth in 1995.  I am continually going back to square one.  As I said my grandfather was told she had died in childbirth (with him.)  She didn't and we were not aware of this until I started looking for her grave last year.

My family history has now got quite convoluted and complicated (and possibly a bit illegal.)  I am thinking my g. grandparents may have met either in London (big German community there) or perhaps in Germany after WW1.

Hi Sarah !

Well I was checking the Archives for Naturalisation and Citizenship -  Grants of British Nationality
but they are closed for 100 years for your Gertrude !  though you probably know that already !!  ::) were you able to get her hospital records at all ? - I wonder if an enquiry at the Nursing Home might give you a starting off point ......... but I'll keep looking for ideas ! - in the meantime - I hope somebody can come up with some positive information for you !

Hi Sarah, and Annie  ;D

What was Gertrude's father's name per her marriage to William?
Could any of the marriage witness' be a clue re: Gertrude?

Cheers

On her death certificate it names her as 'Gertrude Neate otherwise Gertrude Daltrey.'  Neate was the surname of the man she lived with before they both went into the nursing home. They were, to our knowledge, never married.

Looking down the marriage witnesses line now.

Thanks!

Sarah

Me again!

Traced both witnesses through National Archive.  Both men were in RN and served with William on Victory at roughly the right time.

Fantastic tip!
