Yes I have checked the divorces     Myself and several other cousins have been hunting everywhere and haven't been able to find William. 
There is a family rumour that William was possibly in trouble with the law.
Others think he could possibly have changed his name.
Others think he may have gone overseas.
I am hoping someone may know of him.

I see William was born in Germany, do you know if he was a German citizen? or whether his father was British?  I was wondering as to whether German citizens were interned in WW1 and, if so, whether there is a list perhaps in the National Archives

Patterson does not sound to me to be a German name. Do you know if Patterson was  his surname at birth? What about his immigration records?

Do you have any of the children's birth certificates?

You really need to get the 1896 one, I think. That will show you the family address, William's occupation at the time, etc, and may give you an idea of whether or not he actually hung around until the last daughter was born or if he was gone by then.

Given the region William was from (Schleswig-Holstein) he may be Petersen originally and Torvil/Torval = Torvald/Thorvald?

Mother:  Petronilla Larson

Father: Parker Nilson Patterson, occupation Soldier

They may have been Danish, before Schleswig Holstein, became part of Germany, but not sure about the historical time line of this


There is an account of court proceeding in the newspaper where William had evidently assaulted his step-daughters fiancee and William was referred to as "that excitable foreigner". 

So I guess that it would have been the Ararat Newspaper,  but cannot find anything relating to this family story on the trove web site.

William has got 2 step daughters
Harriett Ellin Jones b 1874 Ararat, married 1899 William Pat Procter or Proctor
Eliza Fry Jones b 1876 Ararat, cant find marriage date, but her daughter was born 1910

That would mean that William was still in Ararat before 1899
