NZ lookup - Henry Dudley about 1868

I am looking for information on a Henry Dudley, such as the name of the ship he sailed to NZ on and any details of the family that may have been with him

My grandfathers book had the following note on Henry

"Henry, born 1835, arrived in New Zealand in 1868. His photograph and that of his daughter Mary, taken about 1880 to 1890 by Christchurch and Dunedin photographers would suggest the family lived in the South island at that time. About that time also, correspondence  between the Victorian and New Zealand families ceased. The records of the Registrar General's Office in New Zealand state that Henry was born at Woodhouse Eves, Leicestershire, he arrived in New Zealand in 1868, was a blacksmith by occupation, and married a second time before his death at Ashburton in 1913. His children and first wife are not recorded" 

His first wife may have been -  ANN YATES  marriage 05 MAR 1867   Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick, Eng

Hi Shane,

Have you tried the shipping lists on line, slow I know, and not in an easily searched alphabetical order for the passengers, but you might get lucky, also the library in Christchurch might be able to help, have a look at their website www.library.christchurch.org.nz they have an extensive card system for BMD in the Canterbury area.

If Henry did not arrive in Lyttelton the other ports are searchable in  in the shipping lists.

Hi Shane,

I checked the microfiche 'Passenger Lists Victoria AUS to NZ Ports: 1852-70' for your Mr DUDLEY - not found. This eliminates ships that arrived in NZ via Victoria during this period.

I checked the NZ Biographies Index at National Library – no listing.

If Canterbury Museum is unsuccessful another likely possibility is that he arrived at Port Chalmers Dunedin, and Otago Settlers Museum is an outstanding source. Also try this excellent site which includes transcriptions of newspaper reports listing passengers broken down into year:

Thanks for the great information.  My details on Henry are that he re married a second time to a Maria West around 1911/12 when he was 77. she was 68 and that he was died at Ashburton in 1913.  I have a copy of his death cert.

The marriage you mentioned in 1911 looks promising as it mentions Maria West.  As a matter of interest what do NZ marriage certificates show?  Is it worth ordering one?
