Can anyone advise me where to find parish records relating to the Torthorthwald area. I've traced my family back via the 1841 census but would like to get further back.

The transcription of the 1851 census of Torthorwald shows Archibald Snedden as aged 4. His father was James aged 47 and his mother Jane aged 38.

The 1841 census shows a James Sneddon aged 30, so even with rounding, I am far from certain it is the same person.

If anyone could tell me more about James and the maiden name of Jane I would be very obliged.

9th August 1844 James Snedden married Jean/jane  McKune in the parish of Thothorwald

Jane died May 5th 1881 she was the daughter of William McKune and Margaret Hamilton  her death registered by James Snedden (Widower)

Could not find the death of James... but did find a couple of possible births...

one 1799 and the other 1804...

the current minister of the parish of Thorhorwald is Minister Rev. Louis Bezuidenhout

maybe getting in touch with him may knock down a couple of brick walls...

I've got a Mary Sneddon on my family tree. No dates, but she married William Johnstone and their daughter Jane Johnstone was born c1811 Gillfoot, Torthorwold.

The 1803/4 would be the most likely birth of James Snedden. Do you have any details?
