Fearnley
« on: Monday 01 May 06 19:27 BST (UK) »
I am having a problem definitively identifying a link:

My maternal Great Grandfather was
Samuel Fearnley born 1869/1870 son of Thomas Fearnley - mothers name as yet unknown.
He married 9 April 1898 ( have cert) at Methodist New Connexion Chapel, Hunslet Rd, Hunslet, age 28, batchelor, Plumber (Journeyman) of 39 Clarence Rd, Hunslet
son of Thomas Fearnley, Deceased, Plumber, Journeyman

1881 census has 2 possible families
Thomas Fearnley (37), brass finisher, and Sarah Ann (37) + Samuel(11) born Bradford. RG11/4446/92
and
Thomas Fearnley (36), miner, and Ellen (37) + Samuel(10) born Churwell. RG11/4431/28

I need to find these in '91 and '01 to see which, if either, Thomas is dead at the marriage date in '98

My own thoughts are that 'brass finisher' is possiblymore in line with a job change to 'plumber' than 'miner' - so I prefer the Thomas+Ellen family.

Can anyone help kickstart this line of enquiry

Thanks

Allan Smith

Hi Allan,

Do you have your Samuel in 1901 to start with? I see that the one born Bradford (plumber, married to Mary A, children Ellen 1899 and Thomas F 1900) has a brother William age 33 living with him.

Any use?

Hadn't checked 1891 - that's perfect. Especially as he's down as 'Sam' on the 3 census returns.

The clincher would be to find a family member - e.g. Sam's mother - living at 39 Clarence Road, Hunslet in 1901.  So far, can't trace her ...

1871 Census - Bradford East End
RG10/4460 folios 20-21 pp 34-34
7 Mab Street
Thos. Fearnley, head, mar, 26, brass finisher(?) & gas fitter, Bradford Yorkshire
Ellen Fearnley, wife, mar, 27, Selby Yorkshire
Willie Fearnley, son, 3, Bradford Yorkshire
Samuel Fearnley, son, 1, Bradford Yorkshire

I suppose a gas fitter is a plumber of sorts.
