Does anyone know where I could find or access the Parish Records for St Michael's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne?

Margaret :)

Hi Mosiefish

Sorry I don't know the surname. I have just found my 3 x great grandmother on the 1841 + 1851 censuses and her married name is Lucy Berry born Hulland circa 1780-1790.

I think that she moved to Ashton-Under-Lyne before she married as her 3 children were born there and christened between 1815 and 1817. Her husband was called James Berry born Droylsden and as that is close to Ashton I presume they married there.

I don't have any dates for either her birth or marriage so it was a long shot that someone may have a Lucy born 1780-1790 in their family tree. I know that Hulland was a farming area and from the old maps there was very little housing in the area. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hope that there may only be one or two Lucy's of the right age in the area at that period. At least it would narrow down the name search.

Could you please have a quick look to see if there is a birth for her.

Thanks

Margaret :)

Eric

Thanks for the website it looks promising. I will need to do some more delving and then it looks like a trip to Manchester for me when I can find the time.

Thanks once again.

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Sorry I do not have marriages in that time frame for St. Michaels.

Have you considered the marriage on the IGI of a James Berry to Lucy Smith on 1st September, 1805 at Manchester Cathederal?  Given their ages it could be them.
Older children may have been baptised before they moved to Ashton and had left home by the 1841 census.

As she was born in Hulland, Derbyshire I did try the Parish registers for Wirksworth - www.wirksworth.org.uk which is a brilliant site but there was no Lucy Smith of the right age baptised.  However she could just have easily been baptised at Derby or Ashbourne.

Mo

Hi Mo

Thanks for going to all that trouble I really appreciate it. I had seen the Lucy Smith/James Berry marriage but I am not sure about it. The family moved from Ashton to Newton Heath so I am keeping an open mind about that marriage at the moment. There is always a possibility that they did live in Manchester at some time but James was an Ag Lab so I was hedging my bets on them staying in close proximity to Ashton/Droylsden/Newton Heath  because of the number of farms in the area.

I will keep looking for them and especially for Lucy as she comes from the least populated area which may be easier.

Thanks once again.

Margaret :)
