Need Marriage Cert Info.
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 01:56 BST (UK) »
I know that when my 4x greatgrandparents married in Sawbridgeworth Hertford in 1820,  they  were married by licence, and a rootschatter  has  sighted the parish records for me, unfortunately the original record for the marriage  certificate is not held at HALS, would any one have any idea where the original could be held and what information would I get on the certificate. Thanks.

Hi Jericho

Are you saying that there was a marriage license issued but no marriage in the parish registers?  Does the license give any options as to where the marriage could take place - what exactly does it say?

Of course, there is always the possibility that the marriage never actually took place - much like banns being called but the actual wedding being "cancelled".

Hi Casalguidi

Sorry if I've confused you, the wedding did infact take place, but the only records that are held in Sawbridgebridge is what is on the parish register, I suppose what I am wanting to know is  if there would be any other record of the marriage held anywhere. I am aware that registration did not happen until quite late in England, so does this mean  that parish records are all that is available.

Can you please let me know also what is on marriage and death certificates in England. Thanks

Hi Jericho

The information from the actual parish register (as an example something like the entries below) is the norm from 1754-1837:

However, if your couple married by license and the records survive then there just may (or may not) be a little bit more information available from the license ie.age/occupation/parents if minors/name of bond etc. - it varies greatly.

I'll move your post over to the Hertfordshire board where it will be seen by those with more knowledge of the resources for that area.

BMD certificates came into being at the start of civil registration (1837) - the following site is a good guide http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/marriages.htm

Prior to 1837 it is parish registers.  See the following post for a rough guide to what is usually in the registers at given dates http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,145404.msg660184.html#msg660184

Hope this helps
