Completed thanks 1841 census lookup please Westover
« on: Saturday 06 May 06 08:48 BST (UK) »
Hi
Am hoping to find a John Westover in the 1841 census.
His wife might be a MaryAnn but not sure on that.

He had a son William Joseph Westover born about 1839 possibly Halling, Kent
sorry that's all I know do hope it's enough.

Have got my fingers and toes crossed!!!!
Thanks in advance,
Lilygirl.

Hi Lilygirl

I can't see them .............. do you have any of them in a later census and/ or what is the source of your information?

Hi there Casalguidi,

I've gone back over the info I have and have just noticed a death article that states Ann Westover being wife of John Westover a tailor then at Port Adelaide saying she was late of Canterbury, Kent, England and aged 42 in on 1st Jan 1866.

I knew it was Kent but thought I had something that pointed them to Halling but maybe Canterbury might be more worthwhile do you think???

Still have to try and track down how and when they came to Australia.
I'm pretty sure he was married in 1859 and think that was in Australia.

Thanks again really do hope you can find him in 1841 but if not thanks so much for trying.

Lilygirl.

There is this family but whether they are yours or not ???

1851

High Street, Seasalter, Kent

John WESTOVER head mar 30 ironmonger b.Ramsgate Kent
Ann wife 27 b.Seasalter
Ann M dau 6 b.Seasalter

HO107/1625 folio 484 page 2
.................

Unfortunately, the 1841 census returns for Seasalter don't survive if they are likely to be there then - this John may have married in 1843 see http://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/home.html so wouldn't fit with a couple marrying in Australia c1859 nor was he a tailor nor did he have a son William Joseph c1839 with him in the 1851 census :-\

Hi,

Thanks for your help.
I'll have more of a look around and see what I can come up with.
It sure is frustrating when don't really have much info to go on but slowly gathering more.

Are there any other Westovers in the 1841 census at all from the Canterbury area?? Wondering how common the name is in that area?? any suggestions where I should look next?

Hi Lillygirl

I would suggest that the best avenue of research is to start with what you actually know for certain or can confirm from Australian records ................ who are you absolutely certain about and what do you know about them?

Would it be William Joseph WESTOVER?  If so, do you have or can you get any information from his death/marriage/emigration records?

As far as I can see, the name was not that common in Kent during the mid 19c ................ perhaps only a few dozen or so.

Hi
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
I got a bit excited and confused a bit so have to settle down a bit and see what I've actually got!

Think I'm best to look into the emigration but that may give me more to work with.

Thanks again - you've been most helpful.
