1841 Census look up please Caroline PLUMSTEAD
« on: Saturday 06 May 06 21:22 BST (UK) »
I would like the details of a Caroline PLUMSTEAD listed in the 1841 Census Index for Oxfordshire. The Caroline I am looking for was about 8 in 1841 and was born in Shoreditch Middlesex.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
Thanks
Plum

On the 1841 census very bad copy but does say not born in County. Have you got the 1851 information can send it if you need it.

In 1851 Caroline was with her family living in Croydon, Surrey.
Her father by then had died.
I am really interested in where she was in 1841 and with whom she was staying. The only Caroline Plumstead of the right age was the one in Oxfordshire. Was this the right one? And was she staying with relatives? These are the questions I'm trying to get answers to.
Thanks especially to Toby.
Cheers

This is the image entry for the Caroiline that you quote from 1841.
Her name is as spelt on the image

1841

Gray's Hill, Gray's Rotherfield, Oxfordshire

Sarah Vaughan age 25
Mary Crosley age 20
Caroline Aylett age 9
Henry F Rouodon age 9
Caroline Plumsted age 8
Caroline Warner age 20

Only Caroline Warner born in County

Not the most helpful entry unless any of the names mean anything to you.

Thanks Tricia.
The names of the others in your entry mean nothing at this stage to me. The next question has to be: was Gray's Hill a school perhaps or were the quoted people in a workhouse or maybe a religious institution?
Anybody know?
Cheers

The 1841 census is very unhelpful, unfortunately. I had assumed it was an area. It appears after Gray's Lane on the images. Lots of different families lived on it.

Thanks again Tricia.
Its a bit of a mystery to me why the family who were in Shoreditch in 1841 should send their 8 year old daughter to Oxfordshire. More questions than answers ............!
Anyway its very kind of you to assist with the look up.
All the best
