NBI - Whitchurch - 1860s.
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 16:53 BST (UK) »
I wonder whether anyone with access to the NBI for Shropshire could do a look-up for me.

I am seeking the death / burial of Elizabeth Stockton in the 1860s, probably in Whitchurch.  She would have been aged 80+.  I cannot tie her down on the St. Catherine's bmd Index as ages were not entered pre-1866, by which time I think that she was almost certainly dead.

At the time of the 1861 census, she was living at Pepper Street, Whitchurch, the town where she had been for most of her life.  Her age varies from census to census, but in that census she was recorded as being 85 (which I think could have been overstated by anything up to 5 years.

Thank you for reading this post.

hi SandraC,

Thanks for having a look - it is appreciated.

I suspect, from what you say, that she may have gone to stay elsewhere after the 1861 census as she was in her 80s by then and had, according to that census, just gone blind.

Hi,

They have the BMD's for Whitchurch in the local library - if no one else can find them on CD etc - will have a look next week for you.

Cheers

Keith.

P.S. Anything else while I am at it??

Hi Keith,

Thanks very much indeed - that would be very kind if you have the time to look for Elizabeth Stockton's death.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The only other member of the family for whom I cannot find a death is Elizabeth Stockton's husband, also of Whitchurch, one William Stockton born 1776.  Unfortuanately, he was dead by the time of the 1841 census and probably died pre-bmd registration days.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

As always when I do lookups – it’s good news – bad news!!   ;D ;D

First the good news:   ;D ;D ;D

1939 Death/burials
  Name         Abode      Date      Age

William Stockton   Welshes Yard   Dec 1st      60

No other Stocktons from 1838 – 1842

Now the bad news – no sign of Elizabeth from 1855 – 1875 – however I did find the following which may be useful:   :'( :'(

1861
John Stockton      Albrighton Lane Oct 10th   73
1862
William Stockton   Welshes Yard   Sep 1st      75
Thomas Stockton   Birgin Inn   Nov 25th   66
1863
Hannah Stockton   Workhouse   June 1st   74
1864
Margaret Stockton   High St   May 9th   68
1867
John Stockton      High St   Dec 7th      7 months
1874
Mary Stockton      St Alkmunds St Mar 19th   18
1875
Henry Stockton   St Alkmunds St Sept 8th    21

I also had a quick look around the churchyard – but unfortunately did not have the correct footwear for the wet long grass!!
However I did see the following:
Mary Stockton – March 13th 1871 – aged 18
Henry Stockton – Sept 4th 1875 – aged 21
Ann Stockton – mother of above – July 8th 1879 – aged 60
John Stockton – husband – 1886

Might get a chance to have another look later in the week for any headstones – but wonder where Elizabeth got to??!!

Hope some of the above helps

Cheers

Keith

P.S. sorry columns don't line up - but you get the idea.
