1841 Census Leek & Lowe - Help Needed
« on: Monday 08 May 06 23:26 BST (UK) »
Please could someone with access to the 1841 Census of Leek & Lowe help with deciphering a place name?

The reference is HO107/1005/6 Folio 23 Page 6.  No matter how many times I look at the place I cannot make out the first word of the name.  I think/assume the second word is "Street".  I've even looked at about 10 other pages in case one of them looks easier to read, but that was no help either.

Any help or informed guesses would be gratefully received.

Thanks a lot
Linda

Duh!  I didn't even know you could look at that!

I forgot to ask in the last message, but I'd also like suggestions for the occupation of Samuel Plant, age 22.  I think it starts with Wh and the second word is Man.

Hope I'm not missing something so totally obvious again.

Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda

Could Samuel's occupation be Whouse man (Warehouse man)  :-\

Anyone else any ideas?

Hi Susan

I did wonder that, but had never seen it abbreviated to that before.  Also I am only just beginning research in Leek and wasn't sure that they had warehouses there at that time.  I am used to that as an occupation in Manchester and Salford, but think of Leek as being more rural, which is probably a huge mistake.

BTW, love the photo of your Grandad, he looks very impressive in his uniform.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
In the 18th and 19th centuries there was a thriving silk weaving industry in Leek.

Don't know if you are interested but Spout Street in Leek is still there, it is now called St Edward Street.

Thanks, I'll make a note of that.  It's always good to visit these places if/when the opportunity arises.

Best Wishes
