Glamorgan baptisms pre 1837 look up please - Butler *COMPLETED
« on: Friday 12 May 06 00:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if some kind person who has the  pre 1837 Glamorganshire  Baptisms CD wouldn't mind doing a look up for me.

I am looking for Thomas Butler with a father's name of Edward ( and any other spelling variations that may fit , Buther, Butter etc- as they do tend to get mistranscribed a lot ).

Thomas was born around 1803( give or take a few years)
His father's name according to Thomas's second marriage cert which I have was Edward Butler, occupation Sawyer   ( Thomas's first marriage was before BMD - and the original parish record which I have seen did not give me any extra help in regards to the witnesses who were not Butler's)

Thomas's birth is  not on the IG,  except for his "born about age"- and no other info including parents names-  ie it's guesses by a private submitter, which they've come to that  guessed conclusion from either the censuses or by his first marriage

I don't know where Thomas was born . He's definitely Welsh and not an immigrant from England - he was welsh speaking  , and all the gravestones for this family are in Welsh.
He says  he was born in Llangyfelach in the censuses ,but I don't think he was born there at all. I have found no evidence at all to him being born there. His children and grandchildren were all born there , but  there are no other Butlers around his age ( possible siblings) or older than himself  in the area (  for his parents , uncles etc), and I have found no burial record  for his father Edward Butler (or any older Butler's than himself - except for one, and I've traced him , and he is not a relation) in the local church records and area where Thomas himself  and wives and children are buried.
So I've basically exhausted all avenues in the area where he lived and died- from all censuses, to all the local church records of him and his children.  .

I've looked in the local church records in Llangyfelach when I went home for a holiday, and found all the marriages and deaths, and gravestones for  him and his children, but there  were no baptisms for this family either -  So I haven't ruled out that they maybe  non conformists.

There is an Edward Butler in Merthyr Tydfil on the marriage CD  I have that maybe old enough to be his dad - Is there any Thomas Butlers baptisms in that area, with a dad Edward ,occupation sawyer? Or perhaps he may come from Bridgend ( where a lot of the old Welsh Butler families come from originally)

I can not get back with this family any further unless I find a baptism for him ( I've been trying for almost 2 years with him). I know for sure he wasn't baptised in his two local churches where he married and is buried

Thank you so much for any help at all  :)

As far as i am aware(and i have been in touch with various suppliers) there is not a baptisms cd for wales and you will need to look at each church individually. I have various records(see look up offers) for around the Bridgend area so if you want me to look in any of them you suspect could be of use then let me know.
Karren
 ;)

I checked the records i have and the only Thomas Butlers listed are born in the 1820's with fathers names listed as John and Henry.
I have also found somewhere that does the baptism cd but i dont know how complete it is judjing by the price and the fact that no information is available for it and also that other cd publications are available for seperate churches. If somebody has it then i am sure they will look for you.

Hi,
thank you for the replies, oh well back to the drawing board - Thomas Butler is proving very diffcult to go further back with.

As Vicky said, there is a Baptism Cd which the Glamorgan society has produced ( which can be purchased on Genfair)- costs around 15 pounds. I think it is  a fairly recent production as when I ordered my Marriage and censuses Cd's off them a few years ago there was no Glamorgan Baptism CD. I will be ordering the Cd myself of course  for my other lines

Thanks  for your  kind offer Badgirl  - but I haven't a clue  where he came from, he says Llangyfelach - but I have found no evidence of this in the church records ( I think he just moved in for the coal as so may others did) so I wouldn't know what church to look through in Bridgend. Bridgend is just a wild  guess because it's where a lot of the  very old Butlers come from ( the castle originally). Merthyr Tydfil too because there is an Edward Butler marriage just before 1803.

Thank you to  you both :)

I think the cd is recent too as i contacted loads of people about one a few months ago and i could not get one but yesterday i managed to find it so i ordered it as i needed it badly.
There are so many churches in Bridgend that it would take ages to look through every register but maybe there is a look up service for baptisms you could use via the family history society. I have seen offers but i dont know if you need to be a member for them to do it.
Good luck anyhow.
