1841 Census look-up please LEWIS
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 08:40 BST (UK) »
In tracing the LEWIS family, I have the marriage of William LEWIS and Theodosia Sophia PRITCHARD in Abergavenny 1801, the baptism of their 3 children: Ann (1802), William (1803), and Frances (1804) in Abergavenny, and the marriage and subsequent children of William jnr.

I think that Theodosia was born in Madley Herefordshire 1784. I have no record of her or William snr (or either of their daughters for that matter), after 1804. I have looked for her death and although I found 2 of the right name, neither were a match for her age. William LEWISes are very plentiful, but I'm hoping that someone can find Theodosia in the 1841 Census.

Any help will be gratefully received.

can't see her in Monmouthshire but in Hereford St Nicholas, Broomey(?) Hill
William Lewis 67 Dealer (?)          not born in county
Theodosia 49                                  born in county
H0107/433/5 15
the writing is very faint and I'm not too sure about the age. She's indexed as Theodoria or something similar but looks like Theodosia to me. Could just be coincidence, but it might be?

Thank you very much Osprey,
It hadn't occured to me to try searching for Theodoria! though its a rather obvious "variant" now that someone else has pointed it out  :-[
I think there is a strong probability that this is the couple I'm looking for - the occupation and the location are the same for William jnr so perhaps father and son were in business together. I'll look into that and check the Trade Directories - that may even help me find out when they moved to Hereford.
I'll also check for deaths for Theodoria
Thanks

Think I might have been  less then clear. She's on the census as Theodosia but has been indexed by a well known company as Theodoria - it's their error. I found her using a partial name and wildcard - I was amazed how many people there were with similar names. The writing isn't easy to read on 1841 as I some of it was written in pencil I think, so mistakes are bound to happen. The age definitely said 49 which seemed a bit young, but perhaps her husband was being chivalrous! He was certainly old enough to be the father of children in the 1800s.
There are 2 deaths of a Theodosia Lewis on Freebmd in the 1840s. One was in Carmarthenshire with a corresponding entry on the census in 1841. The other one was in Bloomsbury but I didn't make a note of it. Ooops.

Thanks Osprey,
You were quite clear - I understood that it was an indexing error. When I said I'd look for deaths for Theodoria, I meant that I'd widen my search to include that name as well as Theodosia.
I have since found a baptism entry for Theodosia LEWIS daughter of William and Theodosia at St Nicholas Hereford in 1815, which further corroborates the assumption that you have found the correct one.
I saw those 2 deaths too. If I'm lucky I might find a will.

Glad you managed to find some new info and that it's probably the correct Theodosia. Still surprised at the number of them on the census but not surprised at the number of variants!
