Hi

I have had a look at this one for you and have found the following

from 1841 - Newbury  Berkshire

James Gibbons 1816  - Labourer
Martha Gibbons  1821
Edward Gibbons  1836
Henry Gibbons  1839

from 1851 - Newbury  Berkshire

James Gibbins head born 1815  Newbury - seller of firewood
Martha Gibbins wife born 1817  Newbury
Edward Gibbins son born 1836  Newbury
George Gibbins son born 1846  Newbury
James Gibbins son born 1849  Newbury
John Gibbins son born 1849  Newbury
Martha Gibbins daughter born 1844  Newbury
William Gibbins son born 1850  Newbury

from 1861 - Newbury  Berkshire

James Gibbins head born 1814  Newbury - dealer in wood
Martha Gibbins wife born  1816  Newbury
Anna Gibbins daughter born 1853  Newbury
Elizabeth Gibbins daughter born 1853  Newbury
George Gibbins son born 1847  Newbury
William Gibbins son born 1851  Newbury Son

The son Edward is not there and I can't find him anywhere else in that year or 1871

however in 1881 he is in Reading gaol - he is a prisoner -
given as married head of his household and occupation - carpenter

Meanwhile also in 1881 in Newbury workhouse is -
Elizabeth Gibbons born 1868 (Naturalized British Subject), India Pauper
James Gibbons born 1874 Newbury Pauper

However what ties it all together is in 1891 the James who was in the workhouse in 1881
is with his uncle William Gibbons and family - if you see 1841 & 1851 William is the brother of Edward

1891 census - Newbury  Berkshire

William Gibbons head born 1850 Newbury - Coachman
Martha Gibbons daughter born 1885 Newbury
Annie Gibbons daughter born 1882 Newbury
Emily Gibbons wife born abt 1852 Newbury
George Gibbons son born  1881 Newbury
James Gibbons nephew born 1874 Newbury - indoors servant - books

Just a guess but possibly James's dad Edward also spent some time in the army hence
the birthplace of the lass who is probably James's sister and reason why he is hard to find in some census years

James born 1874 was registered in Newbury reg dist Sept qtr Volume: 2c  Page: 222

You will probably have to send for the certificate to check the fathers name and occupation and to find the mothers details - I could not see any obvious candidates she may have died before 1881 whaich was why the two children were in the workhouse.

Hope you find this lot helpful

Thank you so much J.T.L. and Debbie.
Debbie I think that it's possible this is Edward.I have little information on him,but James was my Grandfather and born c.1874.On his marraige certficate from 1897 Edward was deceased.James lived and worked in Oxford that's why I said this area, but I guess Newbury is'nt far away. Also another clue is that some of his children were called Martha,George and Henry all names in the census.I wonder what Edward did to get himself in gaol? It's interesting information and gives me something to work on.Thanks again.Regards.Pat.
