1841/51/61 Look up please THOMAS family
« on: Wednesday 17 May 06 15:34 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm looking for Joseph and Sarah Thomas.

All I have so far is that their son Robert was born 9 Aug 1820 and

christened 3 Sep 1821 at St Mary Magdalene WOOLWICH Kent.

On Robert's m.cert in 1858 (in Shrops) Joseph's occupation was given as Bricklayer.

I realise it's not much to go on, but fingers crossed!

Many thanks

Hello Iris

Yes that's my Robert and family in 1861. Thanks very much for your help. I've since found out that Robert's father Joseph was a  Gunner in the Royal Artillery, so that's why Robert was born and christened in Woolwich. I've also got a copy of the Parish Reg, entry for his christening, unfortunately it doesn't give his mother's maiden name. On the IGI there are 4 marriagies between a Joseph Thomas and 4 different Sarahs around that time!  So I'm a bit stuck now. I think I'll get in touch with the Royal Artillery next and see what records they hold.

I was hoping Joseph and Sarah might have turned up on the 1841 censu in the Woolwich area.

Anyway thanks again

Regards

Beryla

Hi Beryla
Hope you had a nice time  :)

In the 1851 census there is a Robert born Woolwich:
Wellington Shropshire
27 Ketley Sand
Robert  Head  Marr  29  Shoemaker  Woolwich
Mary  wife  30  Binder  Staffordshire

Next door No 28
Joseph Thomas Head Widower  57  Bricklayer  Salop Wellington

Maybe Mary died and he remarried Gertrude?
Best Wishes....Iris  :)
Walter Kent/Essex/Staffordshire  Pollard Kent/Sufflok
Spunner Kent
Loft Kent
Pidwell Kent/Essex
Ludlow Kent
Flavel / Flavell Staffordshire

Hello Iris,

A swifter reply from me this time!

That's brilliant. Yes that's definitely them, as Robert was a widower when he married Gerdrude Ellis in 1858 in Wellington Shrops, so Mary died between 51 and 58. That also narrows the search for Sarah(Joseph's wife) doesn't it.

Thanks very much for you help once again

Hello Iris

Thanks very much once again.

I think that's got to be them hasn't it as the ages tie in so well . Mistakes do happen with places of birth don't they. I've had one or two wrong ones before. Does it give Sarah's place of birth by any chance?

I've just found Mary Thomas's death on Free BMD in 1854 Wellington Shrops, so it's all coming together, thanks in no small part to your brilliant finds!

Many thanks

I wonder if this reference refers to your Joseph Thomas (discharged in 1824 age 27) ???

Quote
WO 97/1265/218 JOSEPH THOMAS Born WELLINGTON, Shropshire Served in Royal Artillery Discharged aged 27 1813-1824

If you think it is him then you could get a copy from the National Archives (depends how many Joseph THOMASs born Wellington about that time were in the Royal Artillery)
