Thomas BOOTH Yorks & Lancs - Boer War
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 00:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi Izabel, saw your offer and wondered if you can help me out with the following please. I’m trying to trace my roots and I’ve fallen at the first hurdle, I can’t find a record of my father’s birth because apparently he lied about his age and date of birth when enlisting ‘under age’ for WW1.

What I do have however is my grandfather’s South African campaign medal from when he fought in the Boar war, which would have been around the time of my father’s birth. My grandfather, Pte 5822 Thomas Booth served with the 1st Battalion of the York and Lancs regiment and his medal has four bars on it;- TRANSVAAL, RELIEF OF LADYSMITH, TUGELA HEIGHTS and CAPE COLONY.

What I would like to establish is between what dates my grandfather’s regiment would have been out of the UK and in South Africa whilst engaged in the above campaigns, along with any other interesting facts about the campaigns.

Regards, Max

I have found some really interesting sites on the Boer War.

I recommend the Conon-Doyle site.  Its easy reading and a good account of the battles.  He mentions the regiments involved and often refers to soldiers by name.

The milne site is a diary of a soldier in the Boer war
