« on: Thursday 18 May 06 08:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
could someone please look up James Humphrey born about 1867 on the 1871 census, his father is also a James.
Im not really sure about Scottish ancestors, this is the first time i have come accross one and ancestry is no good for Scotland.
Thanks
Marie
P.S im not sure where in Scotland, im just going on the 1901 census and a marriage certificate.

Marie,

The IGI is very good for births in Scotland from the start of Statutory Registration (1855) until about 1875.

If you search the IGI for James HUMPHREY, father James, born 1867 +/- 5, there are only 7 entries (two HUMPHREY, two HUMPHREYS, two HUMPHEREY, and one UMPHRAY).

You can search the 1871 census yourself on (the pay per view site) ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

However, unless you have further information, you may not be able to determine which James is yours.  Presumably you have the occupation of the father James which may well help you to determine whether you have viewed/downloaded the correct birth certificate or census entry from ScotlandsPeople.

PS: there are a couple of good posts at the top of this Scotland General board which provide good information about Scottish research.
