Arthur McDonald is showing on the Canadian 1880 census as Roman Catholic which means you won't find any extracted records of his birth on IGI or Scotlands People (where RC records have not yet been indexed although there is a talk of them doing so at some time in the future).

Best bet might be to try to find some clues in the 1851 census assuming Arthur was still in Scotland with family (there are only 10 entries showing on SP for Arthur M*cdonald aged 7-10 in all of Scotland).
