Wilsons of Croydon
« on: Friday 19 May 06 15:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for the Wilson family in the Croydon area, they seem to be a lot of shopkeepers, if you know of any or any shops named Wilson and sons etc, would be grateful of info etc. My line eventually moved down to Sussex.

Regards,
Carol

Hi Carol,
I clearly remember a Wilson's coffee/tea shop on the corner of Crown Hill, opposite George St. or thereabouts.  This was in the 1950s & whenever I smell fresh-ground coffee I'm transported back to that time.  My mother had a tea measuring spoon from there which lived in the tea caddy  :D

Hi Carol,
I agree with the other posts that Wilson's was a coffee shop. It was opposite the Alm's houses, on the narrow part of High St. before Kennards big Shop front. They were coffee importers, then roast and grind it on site. Remember watching the roasting drums in the window. It was a saturday after noon outing shopping, and going to Wilson's to have a coffee, and get some broken wafers,( broken, they were cheaper so you got more for your sixpence)
You could try the local history unit at Croydon, can't remember e adress, just Google it.
good hunting

That's right, Peter  :D  happy memories!  Do you remember Tudor Walk in Kennards?  For me it was the 1950s equivalent
of Disney Worls for this 4 year old  ;D

Hi Jane,
Yes, that was before we had coffee, then the "fight" to get along Surrey Street to get the fruit & Veg, then up to Katherine Street to catch the No 12 Bus home. No big traffic jams then, let the bus or the tram take you to the Black Horse in Addiscombe. "Good old days."

Hi, I’m a bit late to the party but, just doing an online search now I’ve come across this thread! Im a descendant of William Edward Wilson of Wilson’s Teas Croydon. Their shop was at 9, North End, Croydon.
