1841 Mowbray family in Stonesby?
« on: Wednesday 20 October 04 11:27 BST (UK) »
If someone has the time, I would appreciate a look at the village of Stonesby in 1841 - which I believe is in piece 588.

Looking for MOWBRAY Richard and Hannah, both born c.1800. I know they were in Stonesby in 1836, as they had 3 children baptised together - John, Joseph and Lydia. Trying to get an age for John in particular, to check against a possibility I have found for him in a later census.

Thanks, Heather

Greeting's & Welcome. . .Heather.

I'm afraid I didn't find any Mowbray's in
Stonesby 1841. Census. ( HO107 / 588 / 16 / Page 1 ~13.)
Although there was several pages not available. . . :(

Again no Mowbray's found in Stonesby for the Census of 1851.. . . .

But I did find what I think is Richard & Hannah's Marriage :-

RICHARD MOWBRAY ~ HANNAH HUDSON.
Loughborough. 1820.
By Banns.

1861. Scanned Census
Found the following :-

RG9 2301 / 16.

New Street Melton Mowbray.

John Mowbray. Head. 39. Journeyman Maltster. Born Grace De le / Garendon  ? ? ?
Catherine. Wife. 42. Born Melton Mowbray.
Thomas. Son. 18. Journeyman Maltster. Born Melton.
George. Son. 14. Saddler App. Born Melton.
Richard. Son. 11. Scholar. Born Melton.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

I’ll attach the scan for you to make up your mind as to
The birth place for John. . .

I could make out either Grace dieu or Garendon
Both being on the out-skirts of Loughborough.

Hope this is of help to you.

Many thanks Mike - much more help than you might think! I very much appreciate you taking the time to help.
The Mowbrays eventually ended up in Lincolnshire and so may have moved on by 1841.
However this John and Catherine are the couple I had ear-marked in 1881 (when he claimed his birthplace as Loughborough). I knew Richard and Hannah had married at All Saints in 1820 and also that there was a John baptised there to Richard and Hannah in 1822, so it's looking good. Was just a bit confused that he appears to have been baptised again in 1836 with his siblings. Not the first time I've found this happening, but a little strange! I guess I'm now going to have to find a marriage for John and Catherine to confirm his father's name.
They didn't have any children with them in 1881 so you've now given me three more Mowbrays to chase after and a better timescale for finding a marriage! Excellent result, thank you again.

Just replying to myself really, but also to show how one piece of information can turn things around.

What about this marriage in 1842? John Mowbray and Catherine Lockton in Grantham! As his parents settled about 6 miles from Grantham, I suspect this is where I need to look for them in 1841.

Greeting's Again Heather. . . .

Lol...:) I've just rechecked Marriages in Leicestershire
for John & Catherine (1842) but drew a blank. . .:(

But did find Richard & Hannah on their own
on the 1871. Census.
(Sorry it wouldn't let me bring up the image
to copy and put on this message )
But all the details you require are :-

RG 10 / 3544 / 55 / Page 5.
Living in Sedgebrook Lincolnshire.
Both aged 70.

Saying :-
Richard was born in Quorndon Leicestershire.
Hannah was born in Shepshed.

Now I can make out Quorndon on that scann of 1861.
So we're on the right track.. .

Now I'll have a look in Quorn on the 1841.
to see if I can find any other Mowbray's living there. . .

Oh. ..Have you thought of putting this request on the Lincolnshire Section on this site ?
You never know.....

Cheers Mike,

actually I'm OK on the Lincolnshire side - first definite sighting is 1857 when their daughter Lydia married my gg grandfather John Dennis in Sedgebrook. Her brother Joseph I found in the next village along in 1861.
It was really just John I was curious about and I seem to be well away on that now thanks to you  :)

Have managed to find some census details for John and Catherine's sons and the same family names keep cropping up, so I'm 90% sure this is the right John.

Then of course I have to start looking at their Leicestershire roots and that's a whole new ball game !!

Thanks again for your help, Heather

P.S.
Now you say Quorndon I can see it too ...and I really should have spotted that! Seeing as I have an IGI entry on file for a Richard baptised at Quorndon in 1801 to John and Mary  ::) Also a Leda (Lydia?)  baptised at the same time

Busy now going back through my notes to see what else I might have missed LOL
