WEBB in Monmouthshire
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 10:28 BST (UK) »
According to the SIT I am the only Rootschatter researching WEBB in Monmouthshire!

I know this is not the case, so...

Some time ago a lady called Emma from Wollongong posted on a mailing list - she was searching for Gertrude May WEBB (married to David Daniel MORGAN).  Gertie was born in Abersychan in 1893 to Joseph WEBB and Esther BIRD.  I attempted to reply to her message, but the mail bounced.

So if you are out there, Emma - come and find me!!

kind regards, Arranroots

Thanks Steve!  :D

I am actually thinking of making a visit - just as soon as (a) it stops raining - or Noah gives me a lift!!  and (b) I fathom out where is the best place to go for what I need. (I am only over the Severn!)

I think Cwmbran is best for Trevethin records, but is there much there?

Maybe Newport would be better?

I went to the church at Trevethin last time & nearly got scratched to death!!

;)

the rain has not stopped all day here  BUCKET loads
I have never used Cwmbran but Newport is very good, think it all depends what your looking for.
Newport library has lots of lovely stuff to trawl through and the staff are wonderful
Just keep me in mind if you need anything, wellie boots at the ready and camera poised

The recrod Office at County hall cwmbran has all the parish registerss for Trevethin some non-conformist stuff; Schools stuff. Tithe apportionment maps and stuff; Copies of the Gwent FHS Monumental Inscriptions transcriptions; board of guardians recordselectoral rolls from 1890; Hanbury manuscripts; Wentsland and Bryngwyn Estates Manuscripts;

And those are just a few that I cherry-picked from the list in the leaflet published by Gwent FHS and available from their sales office r for 40p and a stamped addressed envelope.

GIBBON, MCDADE, BRIDGER, GUILFOYLE, MACEY, JOHNSON, BELLEW, NATHAN, GEORGE, CLARKE.

Thanks for the tip!

I made my visit in glorious sunshine yesterday - found 2x gt grandparents' grave and we were lucky enough to have a guided tour of St David's Church, Rhymney by the verger - absolutely beautiful in its simplicity (but if anyone has a few spare £0000 it is in dire need of waterproofing!) Have photos to share if anyone would like a copy.

Next time I will (a) find the streets I want to visit on a street map first, instead of driving by & missing them (b) visit either Cwmbran or Tredegar which apparently also houses a local history collection.

The valleys are truly beautiful and although the closing of the mines and associated industries has ravaged the fortunes of the working population, nature is certainly glad of it.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Laurenfay  :)

I don't think so...BUT I have been talking to someone recently who DOES have a James.

Unless it was you?

I will rack my brains & check my correspondence and get back to you.

Welcome to Rootschat btw - and the fraternity of WEBB searchers!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
