1841/1851 census Yorksire East Riding
« on: Sunday 21 May 06 02:19 BST (UK) »
Hello-

First let me thank you for taking your time to read this posting.

I am looking for a Richard b. about 1791 and Elizabeth born about 1893 , last name of PICKERING
(both born perhaps in Middleton) .
Richard and Elizabeth are husband and wife.
Should be in/ near  East Riding area,  of Middleton.
However in 1841 they could be in Sculcoates.
I would like all listed with age's in the house of this family, if this is ok.
I am trying to add or eliminate this some how as being my Great Great grandmothers family.

Thank You for what ever you can provide for me here.
Smiles,
LAH

Hi LAH, ;D

They are definitely not in Sculcoates. I'm sure this is the same family although it looks like "Picking". The writing is squashed and I think it's meant to be Pickering.

Elizabeth, 47, born in county

Hello Darcy,

Thank You so very much for taking your time with these people.. I know that looking for both years, is a lot of looking.
So, please know that I do appreciate all your work on this.

My guess is like Yours.. the name is just missed spelled, its the same people..
I have one more question.. in the 1841 and also 1851 census- do they round down by 5 yrs on everyone ? children also??

Smile,
LAH
PS love that yellow rose !!

Hi LAH, ;D

You are very welcome. I'm glad I could help. ;D

The ages of those over 15 years were supposed to be rounded down. Some enumerators didn't follow this guide line. The ages don't always end with zero or 5.

The age of the children should be correct as there was to be no alteration at all there.

My rose likes you too... ;D

Cheers
Darcy

Hello Darcy,
Your a Gem !!

Thanks for that information.. after getting this information about the age of 15.. being rounded down by 5.
I have come to a conclusion that .. a 15 yr old would show as age 10..
and 13 yr old child listed on the census- could very well have been age 18 in life.
I wonder what ever made they do it that way??

Not like we are not confused enough, with these people NOT wearing their toe tags, with maps, flags directing us to them, line by line. And the birds already chewed up all the popcorn dropped for trails!! Top that with the Mason's coming through and building the BIG BRICK WALLS, we have to chip away at.. (need I go on.. :P )

Anyways, thanks tons..
Much appreciated here, all that you have given to me !!
Ever need help in the states, let me know- I will do what I can for you !!
Smiles Your way..
LAH
