what census are available in the usa
« on: Thursday 21 October 04 05:45 BST (UK) »
 Hello All

Today I received a marriage certificate  from England giving me a Thomas Nolan who is the father of my John Nolan.

Previously sks provided me with two lookups in the 1880 census for the US and now since I have received this certificate I can narrow it down to one.

1st....   City St.  Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota..... Chestnut St.

Thomas Nolan White Male 45 Laborer Born in Ireland
Ellen Nolan  White Female 45 Keeping house  born Ireland
John Nolan White Male  12 at home  born Minnesota
Mary Nolan  White Female 19 at home born Ireland

2nd...  St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota

Robert Nolan White Male 38 Drayman Canada
Bridgett White Female 32 keeping house Canada
John  white male 9  Minnesota
Charles white male 5  Minnesota
Kate white female 3  Minnesota
Mary white female 7/12  Minnesota

It seems the 1st entry is my John Nolan
I was wondering were there any other census's in the US done.I hope this does not sound like a dumb question as  I am new to tracing my family in the USA.

Many thanks

The US has taken a census every ten years beginning in 1790. Only fragments of the 1890 census survive, the rest having been lost in a fire. The most recent American census released to the public is the 1930. The 1940 census won't be released to the public until the year 2012.

Good luck,

Mike

Hi Troods,

if you go to: http://www.census-online.com/links/ and click on USA, you will get links to some of the (partial) american census data, on-line.

These sites also provide links to USA census data:
http://www.censuslinks.com/  and http://www.ormond.i8.com/

There are probably other sites as well, so maybe somebody (an american searcher ?)  can steer you in the right direction.

Good Luck !

Are you aware that some areas of the US did "off year" censuses?  you might check to see if perhaps an 1885 or 1895 census was done in the area where you are looking.
Go to usgenweb.com  click on the state
hope this helps you.   :)

Hello

here is a link to a site that has some Minnesota births and deaths indexed -

there are two Thomas Nolans listed as deceased in Ramsey County. Neither one has much information available online but you may find more information on the actual certificate.

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm?CFID=1525317&CFTOKEN=11708196

NOLAN, THOMAS
Date of Birth:  not indexed
Place of Birth:  not indexed
Mother Maiden Name:  not indexed
certid# 1911-MN-021770
Date of Death:  10/07/1911
County of Death: RAMSEY

NOLAN, THOMAS HENRY
Date of Birth:  not indexed
Place of Birth:  not indexed
Mother Maiden Name:  not indexed
certid# 1918-MN-027884
Date of Death:  01/09/1918
County of Death: RAMSEY

Look around in it the database and see what you can find. There is also a birth index at the same site

Here is another site that focuses on Minnesota history.

Good luck

Troods,

1890/1891 St. Paul MN Directory

Thomas Nolan
240 Sherburne Ave
Laborer

Also, Thomas H. Nolan
535 Rice  --  Business Add
528 Virginia --  Res. Add
Grocer

1900 US Census
Thomas Nolan 67  b. Dec. 1832/33  in Ire  Immi. Year:  1860
40 Yrs. in US  Profession:  Laborer
Wife Helen   65  b. April, 1835 Ire.  Immigration Year:  1860
40 Yrs. in US
Married 35 Years  1 child born/1 Child living
Dau Mary Logia  34  b. Dec., 1865 Ire
G-son,  Robt. J.   12  b. Nov. 1887  Father b. Michigan

No son John   but would be in his 30's by now
Birthdates off from your 1880 info but this is not uncommon
Helen vs Ellen?
1 Child born and 1 living --  presumeably dau Mary --  so what about John?

Did John have a middle name/initial?   Found John B.  cropping up in Ramsey Co.  but  not until 1920/1930 and with some significant variances in birthplace/birth date, etc.

Hello all

So sorry I have not replied sooner to this post as I had actually misplaced it.

Thanks Kathy, Thelma and Crossginny for your info.

Kathy this is great I had totally forgot to look for the family in the US in 1900. I found the son John in England in 1901. As yet I dont know what year he went to England.
The immigration year for the parents seems a bit off as Mary, the daughter was supposedly born in Ireland. It seems Thomas and Ellen must have had only two children.
In regards to the death record you found Thelma for Thomas Nolan in 1911 that could be very well my man.

I would just like to thank-you so very much for your info and help and i really appreciate it.

Regards
