Can anyone date this pic?
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 14:57 BST (UK) »
I don't know if this is the right place, as I don't know where this is a Merchant seaman or Navy. Hope someone can tell me and give a gues as to a date. He may have been born 1890's-1910's or even later.

This is Royal Navy and probably dates from the second World War. I think that lets out any born before about 1915.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thanks Hackstaple,

That may help in finding his birth, He is a mystery, he may have lived with my Grandfathers family, but we can't work out if he is related, as the reason for his existence may have been hushed up.

Shame the band on the hat isn't visable!

Pipkim,
In this instance the "Cap Tally" (hat band) wouldn't be much help, he's got his cap on back to front, the bow should be on the left side of his head.
date as Hackstaple's post.

I'd go along with the second world war, the uniform looks identical to a seaman's uniform in a photo of my grandad and two chums during the war.

Mind you I don't know how often or when uniforms were changed or modernised!

I don't know much about this guy, but I think he looks as if he likes having a lark about, perhaps that's why his hat is back to front. I didn't realise it was back to front, but thought it didn't look quite right.  ::)

Thanks Kerry and Peter for the dating. It means I can channel my search for his birth etc.

Gosh he is very attractive isnt he! A lovely lovely picture and a beautiful grin. I hope that you find a name for him.
The smile does make it look like a more modern photo rather than pre 1940. Is it in a photo booth type setting or is it just me?

Hi Anna,
I have a name for him, but am trying to find out if he was a blood relative (we think he is an illegitimate son of my G Grandfather, who married his mother shortly after my G Grandmother died). My mums generation think he is, but never felt it wise to discuss it with their parents. So now he becomes a mystery. I think he is quite attractive too. A lovely confident smile, would have done well in a Gene Kelly film or such like.  ;D
