DIMELOW history

Dimelow name seems to originate in Cheshire unless someone out there knows better.

I have a Dimelow family back to 1790 in Frodsham but first record Dimela then son's Dimelow thereafter.

Does anyone have history that links Frodsham to Runcorn/South Cheshire/Yorkshire/Manchester?

2 Frodsham Dimelow's moved to Yorkshire, but there are masses registered around Manchester Cathedral 1800's onwards.  Anyone who can help?  Thanks Sandra

Hi Sandra,

There are alot of DIMELOW's in Cheshire.  Other spellings include DIMELA, DIMMELA, DIMALOW, DIMELLOE, DIMELO, DIMELOE, DIMILO, DIMILOW, DIMILOWE, DIMLOW, DIMLOWE, DIMMELA, DIMMELLOW, DIMMELO, DIMMELOW, DIMMILOW - remember, if they couldn't read or write the vicar would spell it how he thought it should be spelt!!  I've known the spelling of some of my family surnames to change with the vicar!!

Runcorn and Frodsham are very close to each other and I have alot of movement between the two parishes in my family.  People moved for work, labour on the land was not well paid and industry in the 1800's offered better prospects.

My ancestor Richard  Dimelow 1807 - 1874 was born in Nottingham.  His father Robert (or Emil) Dumelo was supposedly a French Refugee.  I'm stuck....any tips or hints?

Ann, I can see you have had many people give you lots of help since you left a message in August 06.  I am going to read all the messages you received now, (I've read 3 pages so far).  It seems the Dimelow name in Frodsham Cheshire started around 1790.  I am aware that there are many Dimelow's in the Manchester area as so many Christening's and marriages are recorded at Manchester Cathedral.  I do know how many variations on the name there are.  When Dimela arrived in Frodsham within one generation they became Dimelow as their children were Christened.  I was sent a long very detailed message last year from a lady who lives in Canada it has many many Dimelow's and variations on it, in fact far too much information for me to take in and work with even now.  I'd be happy to send a copy of the whole message to you.  If you have any idea how we exchange individual e-mails without broadcasting across the whole chat forum I'd welcome the 'how to'. I am going away to read the 'help' area on here now to get better aquainted with 'chat' and 'forums'.  Yours Sandra

I am descended from a John DIMMILOW who married *around* 1749 and had at least 4 children in the vicinity of the Great Budworth parish, Cheshire.

I am descended from his daugther Nancy DIMMILOW bapt Nov 14 1862 Great Budworth via illegitimate daughter Mary DIMELOW bpt Jan 21 1781 in Great Budworth.

Mary married Jonathan DICKINSON at St Chad, Over, on Oct 21 1800 and they had 5 children: George, Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, Fanny.

Either of daughters Mary, Elizabeth or Catherine had an illegitimate son Thomas born abt 1833 in Rushton near Winsford whose father was *reputed to be* Robert CARTER and who later married Amelia HOPE, illegitimate d/o Miss HOPE, with father *reputed to be* Joseph BANCROFT.

Mary DIMELOW DICKINSON was buried Dec 23 1860 at Saint Chad, Over while her husband Jonathan was buried Jul 24 1849.

i am a dimelow  my family name from my mums side has been dimelow for over 3 generations i am from yorkshire
