Shipping Lists from America to UK
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 10:04 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone can find any information on people returning to the UK from the States in the early 1910- 20s ?

Here we go-

Elspeth Allan returning possibly to Liverpool or Glasgow around 1918, she may have been with her son John Smith Allan.  Elsie went to America on  16th December 1914 sailing from Liverpool on the SS Lusitania, it lists her age as 40 but she was 52.

John Smith Allan had went to the States on 7th March 1911 on the SS Ivernia, he was born in Aberdeen 22/2/1891.

Alexander Allan went to the USA in 1909 but returned in 1914 to fight in WW1 he would have been joined by his wife Agnes and young son Robert.  Alexander was born 1887

Possibly the most important one for me is that of my Grandfather, Robert Allan .  He went to visit his brother in the Sates on 2nd August 1911 on the SS Merrion sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia we have a return sailing date of November the 20th back to the UK.

If anyone can shed any light on this I would be obliged,

thanks,

Swally

Neither Canada nor USA maintained "outbound" passenger lists.  There are British "inbound" lists, but they are not indexed, nor microfilmed.  The original inbound lists reside at Kew.

The records for all these ship passengers travelling between 1890 and 1960 survives within the collection of original British Board of Trade passenger lists. The only place they can be seen is at the Public Record Office in Kew, England.

These lists are not filmed, not indexed and they are not available on-line.
