where to start

not sure where to start as my Moore's went to the USA and came back. I have the following

1881 Census RG11/3163
Living at 252  Birstall Street, St Margarets, Leicester
Thomas Moore Head Mar Age 33 Occupation elastic web weaver born Whitwick, Leicester
Mary Elizabeth Wife Age 32 Born Thurmaston, Leicester
Florence Kate Moore Dau Age 14 'errand girl' Born Leicester
Thomas William Moore Son Age10 Scholar half timer, 'errand boy' Born Leicester
Edith Mary Moore Dau Age 9 Scholar Born Leicester
George Edwin Moore Son Age7 Scholar Born Leicester
Emily Sarah Moore Dau Age 5 Scholar Born Leicester
Ernest Harry Moore Son Age 8 mths Born Leicester

1891 cannot find a record for Thomas, Mary and Frederick, the other children I can account for and Frederick's birth is definately Leicester 1885

Living at 31 Grove Road
Thomas Moore Head mar Age 53 Occupation elastic web weaver Born Whitwick, Leicester
Mary E. Moore Age 52 Born Thurmaston, Leicester
Frederick H. Moore Son Age 16 ?elastic commercial Born Leicester
Ethel M. Moore Dau Age 11 Born USA American (British Subject)

Am looking for advice as to how I can track them down and maybe fill in the gaps

Hi Elaine

To start off, if Ethel was born US c1890, then they (or some of them!) returned to England then went BACK again to the States in 1895 before the 1901 UK Census

Departed:  Liverpool England & Queenstown, Ireland - Arrived Boston Massachusetts 8 Oct 1893 
Mary E MOORE age 44, Matron

Well, I don't understand this - I'm sure there is a good explanation - but there are TWO records for Mary, Fred & Ethel on the Cephalonia arriving in 1893 on same date - perhaps they were for some official reason listed twice on the Manifest. It's the fact that, on this one in answer to question "Ever been to US before and if so when", the answer is "Brocton 1893"...which puzzles me??? :

(It's completely unfortunate  that the 1890 US Census is the only one that isn't available, having been almost destroyed by a fire - only partial fragments remain!)

Fred went back again in 1906 - travelled alone as far as I can see:

Ship : "Cymric"
Departed Liverpool, Arrived Boston 14 Feb 1906
Frederick H MOORE age 21, single, Clerk, born Leicester.
Nationality : England;  Last Residence: Lester (sic)
Final Destination: Brockton, has a ticket, paid for own passage
Has (at least) $50 US.
Has been before in US: 1899 Brockton.
Relative or Friend going to join in US: Elis OLIVER, 88 Ford Street Brockton
Frederick is: 5'9" tall with Ruddy complexion, Fair hair & Grey Eyes.

The closest match I can get for Thomas' going to the US via Boston is the following:

SS Scythia
Departed Liverpool & Queenstown, Arrived Boston 10 Sep 1888
Thomas MOORE, age 40,
Personal Details: Occupation: Weaver. Native of England, Intended destination: Massachusetts;  Travelled in 1 Compartment Forward and carried 1 piece of baggage. Protracted Sojourn.

He may well have travelled as part of a worker group - I say this because, the Manifest appears to have been written out largely in Alphabetical order, but this Thomas is not in order - I think he could have travelled with a group of men as follows - all with the same Personal Details as listed above for Thomas:
William BAMFORD 25
Alfred BALL 45
Robert CARDEN 30
(Thomas MOORE 40)
Thomas PORTER 32

Manifest indicated he probably intended to stay in the US (protracted Sojourn) And, it would fit with a husband going on ahead of wife & family first to establish employment and a home to live in.

Also, though, they may not have initially entered US via Boston - that could have been the place they ended up in and later travelled from/to - but possibly they at first came via for eg: New York. Nothing jumping out at me though!

One question, do you know if they remained in UK after 1901 ?

Sorry I am very much working in the dark as no one in the family knew any relatives went to America. Have not done too much work further forward, lots of Moore's
