Roots in Co. Armagh
« on: Tuesday 30 May 06 15:20 BST (UK) »
I am trying (in vain) to research a Patrick HANNAWAY, born c.1860 in Country Armagh. He married a lady called Annie and they emigrated to Liverpool, England (don't know if they moved before or after marrying).

Now, I have no other details on Patrick apart from that he died in 1899.

I am after advice on two points:-

- Can I obtain a birth certificate for Patrick HANNAWAY and if so, how? (I only know how to order them for England).
- If they did marry in Ireland, can I obtain a marriage certificate?

I would be grateful if anybody could offer any other advice that may assist my research.

Thanks in advance all :)

IGI have 3 Patrick Hannaway births recorded in your timescale within County Armagh. Each of them are post 1864 (ie when official registration of births in Ireland began) so it should be possible to obtain certificates. Official Marriage records began in Ireland in 1845, so yes, if he married there, you should also be able to track down a certificate.

You can have a look at the GRONI website for further info on ordering certificates or you could try somewhere  such as Family Ulster.

What's the difference between these two sites?

GRONI is the equivalent of the English GRO. Family Ulster is an independant  research service - I have used them a few times and found them to be very helpful and their charges for BMD Index searches or certificate details to be very reasonable.

Patrick Hannaway, boarder, unmarried, age 33, general labourer, born Ireland

There is a marriage for a Patrick Hannaway and Annie Higgins in Liverpool but its in 1905 so too late for yours.

Civil registration of Protestant marriages began in 1845 while for Catholic marriages it was not until 1864.
If Patrick was born before 1864 you will have to look for church records to find a baptismal record.

It has a few matches that might be what your after.

Thanks for clarifying that, aghadowey, I should have done so at the time.

peterk71 - welcome to Rootschat - just wondered, are you by any chance connected with Armagh Ancestry as your first two posts on different threads are recommending it? I realise you may not be and that, like myself and others, you have found it helpful (albeit the cost is, in my opinion, somewhat prohibitive compared to other sites, and now that it has changed to payment in Euros only, akward for some).
