Co. Durham to Illinois?
« on: Tuesday 30 May 06 15:28 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Would anyone be kind enough to help?

In 1881 the Cadwell family resided in Leadgate, Co. Durham.
At some point in the same year they emigrated from
Durham to the Barton/Riverton area of Illinois where
Thomas Cadwell found employment in mining.
Would someone have any idea from where they might
have sailed?
I have also posted similar to this on the Durham site.

Thanks,

Pels  :)

Hi Agnes,

Yes, I think this is most certainly right, I cannot
believe everyone has been so kind!
The strange thing is I can find no trace of Mary Ann
Cadwell, the wife of Thomas?
I have tried Cardwell, Caldwell - even gone through
every Mary Ann, but to no avail. Oh well, I know for certain she got there but how?

Thanks once again for your help,

Pels

Looking at the <ancestry.com> immigration entries for Thomas Cadwell, it looks like a Michael Cadwell (30) may have accompanied the children on the City of Montreal trip.---Genealiza

Hi,

How strange - I think this may count those children out of the equation?
I have just checked the Cadwell children in 1861 and
there isn't a Michael. I thought he may have been a brother of Thomas who also wanted to find employment in pastures new.
It is a very big coincidence though isn't it?
I might try to find out more regarding Thomas's parents,
this isn't an area I have researched because Mary Ann
is my relative, not Thomas.
Michael could be a cousin I suppose..  .. but this feels like a long shot. More likely that Michael Cadwell was travelling with his own children.

Many thanks for this Janis,

Pels

Hi Pels

Having read the messages, I looked at the image again and Ancestry has him indexed as "Nils"

...but here is a cropped image, which still looks to me like it could be "Mr" so don't totally disregard this just yet  ;)

Haven't found your Mary yet!... will continue to look.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Hello Agnes,

Is there any chance that instead of this being Mr Cadwell it could be an M?
Not having personally seen any of these before is there any likelyhood they may have only used the initial?
If this is the case it could be Mary Ann travelling with the children. Now that would solve the mystery of the boys travelling alone.
My first reaction I must admit was that it does look like Mr but it may be MA .. ..if only..  ..

Many, many thanks for your kind interest!

Pels
