Hello Christopher, First of all, Thank you for posting my website (http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk) I appreciate all the hits I get from you.
About the Houstons, here are both entries and I checked the Directory and both are correct so that confuses things even more.
I had a look on the net and 'red tape' could refer to anything from Beer to Typing Ribbons, 'red top' could be safety matches but its anybody's guess.

25 & 27 Houston, S., red top manufacturer

Houston, George, red tape manufacturer, 25 & 27 Melbourne Street

If I can help with any look-ups, please feel free to ask, I have Directories for 1907/1910/1918/1919/1923/1925/1930/1931/1939/1940/1943/1949/1951/1954/1959 and more recent ones, though the recent ones don't have the alphabetical listings in them, just too big I suppose.

I have a joseph houson running a hardware store in crumlin road around 1928 but i do not know if it is the son or the father who is running the shop?

can anyone help?

does anyone know what became of the shop?

Joe, I am lost here.

What are all the Doyles doing on your thread?
If they should not be on the thread go up top left to Moderator and send them a message suggesting they put Colette's message and Mary Lennon's message on Colette's Doyle thread. I usually quote the address of the thread to which a bit should be removed but the moderator really should be able to find it without that assistance

Colette, are you Doyles related to Joe's Houstons? Why is all this information here otherwise. Right enough all
I can see are Houston men. Was one of them courting a Doyle woman on the quiet?

Chris

Hi Joe, nice to hear from you again.

This might confuse things a bit
1918
Houston, John, bleacher, Crumlin Road.   from the alphabetical section
Crumlin Road
208. Houston, John, hardware merchant
102. Houston, A., car owner
can't find any other Houstons in the actual street but maybe he just worked there at The Crumlin Road Mills and Weaving Factory or Brookfield Linen Co. Ltd. because
Butler Street
115. Houston, John

1910 (he'd have only been 17 yo) (do you know his fathers name?)
Houston, John, bleacher, Crumlin Road
Crumlin Road
102. Houston, A., car owner

this is how it was set out in the directory as if Houston, John had something to do with the Bleachgreen.
Houston, John, bleacher
Glenbank Bleachgreen - Ewart, W., & Son Ltd.

maybe check the Ulster Covenant, there's a few John Houstons there and
Houston John 97 Crumlin Road  Belfast: West Shankill Albert Hall

Good Morning Joe,

In the early 1700s John Houston was involved in Linen weaving in Kilbarchan.  I noticed a John Barbour was in the area at that time. It is highly likely that members of the Houston family knew members of the Barbour family.  The Barbour name is an extremely well known one in the history of the textile industry jn the 19th and 20th Century in the north of Ireland. It might be worth while looking at the Houston family of Kilbarchan. It is possibly a red herring but they were on the right side of Scotland to get a boat to the north of Ireland where the linen industry was developing about the same time. www.happyhaggis.co.uk/kilbarchan.htm

Sorry about this Joe. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut about that John Houston of Kilbarchan and left you alone, quietly researching Houstons on the Crumlin Road in Belfast. Look at this lot ... several people researching Houstons of Kilbarchan. gen.forum  #1 It's all right there are not so many conducting research into Houstons of Belfast and you will be pleased to note, well maybe not as you might have been able to compare notes, none looking for Houstons of the Crumlin Road. gen.forum #2 I wonder if the Crumlin Road guys are connected to the Houstons from Cullybackey in Co. Antrim? They built a castle and owned a mill gen.forum #3 There are 272 mentions of Joseph, and 1314 mentions of John.

Best Wishes, Chris
