Hiya Anthony,

Those other Houstons on the Crumlin Road... at what number were they located?
What were their Christian names? Were they in the hardware business too?
Did the Houston family have a flourishing hardware empire on the Crumlin Road?

Best Wishes, Chris

Thanks for your reply Anthony.

I wonder if the carowner, hardware merchant and undertakers were related? The Houston name is still connected with an undertaking business on the Crumlin Road although I do not know if there is a member of the Houston family in the business today.

Best Wishes, Chris

Hiya Guys,

That information is interesting Anthony. It is a long time since I have been on the Crumlin Road. I know the undertaker is still there as it is close to the Mater Hospital. Maybe Colette, if she has the time, could see if some of the other shops are still there when she goes to see Father Troy. Colette seems to be run off her feet with her searches. Perhaps I should use my bus pass and take a trip up the Crumlin Road.

A look through directories from 1930 onwards would probably show a year when there was a different person in one of the shops. That would possibly give an approximate date of death for one of these Houstons. I have to call in the newspaper library to look up that guy who died ..he is a Houston isn't he? Death notices may show a relationship ie "a dear brother" ...that type of thing.

Right Anthony,

We need to go back a bit in time here to see when the Houstons appeared on the Crumlin Road.
Could you look in your directories from 1880 to 1920 please?  I have already looked at this site -    http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/ccomplete1880.htm
Look what I found.. 6, Crumlin Road, Civil Service & Military Academy, Frederick H. Houston, Principal
Joe, do you think this guy is an ancestor too. Would you please have a look at the Crumlin Road for more Houstons. I do not think I missed any but you never know.
I also had a look at this site - http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/alphanames1880gh.htm This gives me a bit of a puzzle. Houston, George, red tape manufacturer, 25 & 27 Melbourne Street. Now why limit oneself to the manufacturing of red tape only?  It does not make much sense to me. Why not a whole lot of colours?

All the Best, Chris
