what will be on a 1844 death certificate
« on: Friday 22 October 04 22:55 BST (UK) »
Hello All

Just a very basic question, what would I find on a 1844 death certificate in Exeter England?

I have the ref off Free BMD and was wondering would it be worth getting.

Many thanks

The content will be very variable but Death Certificates are often important sources of information. Often the person who reported the death will be a great surprise like a child of whom you knew nothing. Cause of death will be reported but don't expect any great medical science in that. Often the year of birth is not what you expected and sometimes the place of birth is a surprise.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi there troods

Death certificates in 1844 should contain:-

Number
When & Where Died
Name & Surname
Sex
Age (Often only Approximate)
Occupation
Cause of Death
Signature, Description & Residence of Informant
Signature of Registrar
When Registered
From 1866 onwards give age at death

Hope that helps

True... But on an 1844 death certificate there will be no reference whatsoever to the date or place of birth. There will be a recorded age which will give an indication as to the approximate year of birth.
