My Father's birth certificate (1916) shows his father as serving as a Private in the 6th Middlesex as a Printer.  Can anyone tell me if it is possible to view military records on line ?

Hi Anya

A starting point might be here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
where you may be able to download your grandfather's medal card.

This should provide some basic info - service number etc.

Dave

Hi Anyas,

The British Origins site http://www.originsnetwork.com/ includes the Militia Attestation Index 1886-1910  for the Middlesex, you can do a basic name search without subscribing.  The original documents are at The National Archives.

Beer (Kent)
Hall/Halle  (Stafford/Enfield/Folkestone)

Silk (Kent)
Southan/Southen/Southern/Southon (Kent)
And more (there are always more!)

the 6th Middlesex wasn't a militia unit so I doubt you'll have any luck in the origins site

unfortunately according to the long long trail site, the 5th and 6th were reserve battalions and never left the UK

'5th and 6th (Reserve) Battalions
August 1914 : in Mill Hill. Both remained in UK throughout the war.'

so you probably won't find him in the medal index cards either!  :(

Thank you everyone for your interest and advice.  Mill Hill rings true as the family origins at that time were in Enfield and Edmonton.  Now all I need is the time to follow up all the new avenues !!  Thanks again.
