Copperwheat
« on: Monday 05 June 06 22:55 BST (UK) »
I'm researching the Copperwheats, My grandmother , a Copperwheat before marriage was born in 1871 in Bedfordshire. Her father Robert was born in Norfolk and i believe his father  John Copperwheat was born in Carlow c1809. according to the 1851/1861/ census.

I can't find anything about John born in Ireland and wondered if it's possible for anyone to see if they can find anything about him there.

His parents i believe were John Copperwheat 1778 and Lucy Wigger 1783 no details of birth places.
I realize this is a long shot but he's causing me problems ::)
 Thanks, hopefully,!! Poli.

Hello polidor,

Neither Copperwheat nor Wigger are mentioned on the Spinning Wheel Census of 1796 or Griffiths Valuations 1848-64.

Spinning Wheel Census of 1796 or Griffiths Valuations 1848-64.

Thank you fo your reply Christopher. I've never heard of either of the above before!.

John Copperwheat junior was born 1809, his parents John senior & Lucy Wigger married in Norfolk in 1805. John senior was in the army and the next known child after John junior, was born in Kent in 1815 and then a sibling born in France in 1817.

I now have some of John senior's army papers and it appears he began his army career in Edinburgh in 1800.

i would love to find an account of my Gt Gt Grandfather's birth.
If his parents married in 1805 it seems unusual that John junior would have been their first child b 1809 because in the 1800's most marriages seemed to produce children from the word go!!  :o

Regards Poli. :)

Hello Poli,

The Spinning Wheel Census and Valuations are on John Hayes www.failteromhat.com site

The Ulster Historical Foundation's series of over thirty volumes of R. S. J. Clarke's Gravestone Inscriptions may contain some details of your ancestors. It might be worth while to have a look at William Roulston's book titled "Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors the essential genealogical guide to early modern Ulster, 1600-1800" as it also covers that period. The appendices to Mr Roulston's book include a full listing of pre-1800 church records for Ulster; a detailed description of nearly 250 collections of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century estate papers; and a summary breakdown of the sources available from this period for each parish in Ulster.

Eighteenth Century Sources.

Books of Survey and Distributions c. 1700
Catholic Qualification Rolls 1778 - 1793
Convert Rolls 1704-1839
Electors Rolls 1761
Estate Records and Marriage Licence Bonds
Flax Growers List (Spinning Wheel Census) 1796
Freeholders entitled to vote 1770
Grand Jurors and Books of Presentiments
Militia Lists 1761
Oath of Allegiance 1775
Poll Books 1752
Proprietors of land circa 1700 list
Protestant Householders 1740 list.
Register of Freeholders 1758
Return of Householders 1766
State prisoners 1798
Voters Lists 1727-1793

If the family was only in Ireland a few years in early 1800s they would be unlikely to appear in anything but church records- for example, a baptism of a child. In order to look for church records you need to know what religion the family were and where they were living (parish if not townland not just county).

Hi Poli,

That's interesting that one of John and Lucy's children was born in France during WWI.

Not sure if it's been changed but date is 1817:
and then a sibling born in France in 1817.
