Knutsford prison
« on: Wednesday 07 June 06 19:02 BST (UK) »
my G/G/ Uncle, George Bowley (bn c1860)  was an inmate of knutsford prison in 1881.
Where can I find out more ? His younger siblings were pauper inmates in Watford Workhouse.
What did he do to end up in Knutsford?

Hi Babs - this is my first day and I am already fascinated!

Only today, I was looking up the Altrincham (later named Bucklow) workhouse which was based in Knutsford - where my great grandfather was also an inmate at the age of 12.

It was not a prison, just a workhouse run by the poor law society for the area, and at the start of the 20th century, became cranford lodge hospital, where I was born in 1963.

You can look it up at http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/home.htm

Hope this helps

Angie

There was a Workhouse and a Prison very close to one another.  If you get www.old-maps.co.uk and enter Knutsford as the place you will see both.  I remember the prison being there on the side of the road in the middle of the town.

To find out a little more  you could try a Google search on "Knutsford Prison".  This gives several sites but the Virtual-Knutsford site provides information from someone who lived in Knutsford close to the Prison.  The same site  enables questions on family history about Knutsford ONLY.  The other hits appeared to give lots of other interesting sites  that could lead to better things.  :)
