Help! A dead end and a possible lead! COMPLETED
« on: Monday 12 June 06 18:54 BST (UK) »
I have reached a dead end with the family of my g-g-grandfather Gideon Palmer.  He was born 1866 Hutton and Corrie, his mother was Mary Palmer. There is no record of his father.  Gideon married Elizabeth Bell b 1865 Tundergarth, at Milkside Tundergarth on 10 feb 1893.  He lived in Ayr for some time before his marriage.  Shortly before WWI he moved with his family to London.

I cannot find his father's name.  I cannot find any info on his mother - too many Mary Bells.

Today I came across the following  inscription from Hoddam Churchyard

Gideon Bell Palmer died Ashgrove 4 Dec 1947 age 58
Wife Margaret Bell died Perth 2 September 1985 age 96
Son Ian Irving Bell died Dumfries 27 June 1996 age 70
father of Gillian...

Surely some connection..??? How can I find out???

Hi julieann,

Now that you have almost an exact date of birth for this Gideon Palmer (c1889), you could look up his birth on Scotland's People (presuming he was born in Scotland) and from this, get not only the names of both his parents, but where he was born and his parents' date of marriage.

Good Luck!

Anne

The dates don't seems to tally. Year of death less age does not equate to birth dates you have supplied.

Also Elizabeth and Mary Bell ?
Andrew, Donald (Wester Highlands), Muckersie (Perth), Symon(s) (Dundee)

It's a totally different Gideon, who I've never heard of before.  It's not a ver y usual name so I thought they may be related.

Gideon's mother was Mary Palmer. I wrote Bell by mistake

Sorry, I think I've added a bit of confusion here!

The approximate date of birth was for the Gideon Bell Palmer buried in Hoddam found by julieann.  Might be a different branch of the same tree tying up further back.

Anne ???

The birth record for Gideon born 16 August 1866 to Mary Palmer shows him as illegitimate and no father is recorded

Where did you find that?  I assumed he was illegitimate as I had not found his father anywhere.
Now I've found the following on Scotlands people
1871 census
Hutton corrie Common
Elizabeth Palmer Head widow 50 Pauper born Hutton
Gideon Palmer son unmarried 23 AG Lab born Johnstone
Gideon Palmer grandson 4 born Hutton (right age and place for my Gideon)
Jane Palmer grandaughter 2 born Hutton

I'm more confused than ever, as well as find Scotlandspeople a little trying on the eyesight.
