The Hands Family, Sunderland
« on: Wednesday 14 June 06 01:57 BST (UK) »
Hello there,
Could  anyone help me find out a bit more about Agnes (nee Boag) Hands and /or her husband John A Hands? They were living in Alfred Street in the  St Andrews Parish in Sunderland in 1901. Agnes died in 1917, aged 77. I've discovered that John was a glassmaker, but not sure which factory or works he was at.

I can't find out anything about where they were married or where Agnes was born, so I'm a bit stuck! I think John may have been born in the Birmingham area.
Thanks in advance for any help  :)

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.
With luck you should be able to find them in 1881 yourself.  It is free to search at www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk   Judging from the birth place and age of the kids they will be in Sunderland.   Shout if you can't find them and I will have a look later.   Ancestry also has the full BMDs free to search so you might be able to find the marriage too.

John and Agnes were my 2x great grandparents. They married on the 29th of June 1856 at St Nicholas church Newcastle. Are you a descendant?

Welcome to Rootschat Fweb,

Unfortunately forss1 hasnt been on Rootschat since 2006 and only made that 1 query.

I see from the Marriage both of their Fathers were named James.

Is there anything any of us can help you with?

Trish :)

I am having trouble finding John before 1861, could only find 1 match for a John baptised with father James glass blower and that was in Lancashire.

Yes I see what you mean;

Ok,
Do you have the actual Marriage Cert?
If so what is his Fathers Occp and Witnesses names?

If you dont have it;

1) His Fathers name may be recirded incorrectly on the entry on Familysearch or by the Vicar as Agnes Father was a James. (seen this sort of mistake before)

2) His Father died and Mother remarried.

3) He was Illegitimate and may have used his Grandfathers name on M/C.

Having said all of that the only likely  John Hands I can find c 1833 Birmingham, has Parents WILLIAM/REBECCA (nee Parsons)
William is the same Occp as John

I do have the marriage certificate, James is a glassmaker and the witnesses are John Gray and Susannah Cardwell. I found that John with parents William and Rebecca but couldn't find a definite connection.
