Edward Wait Baptism in Yoxall 1784???
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 18:12 BST (UK) »
Can someone please offer me some advice or help with a frustrating dead end I have in my tree.

I recently travelled to the Staffordshire Record Office to look up my 5x Great Grandfather's, baptism/Christening in the Yoxall Parish Records. I'm certain he, EDWARD WAIT, was born around 1784 in Yoxall, but when I looked at the records, unfortunately there was a statement added to the Fiche stating that half the year 1784 was missing fom the original parish register and so couldn't be photographed.

Travelling from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, by train I didn't have alot of time to see if there were any other records that could help.

I have since thought of a few idea's to check and wondered if anyone could help or give suggestions on them.

1) I only checked 1784 and 1785 I think, although I am fairly certain he was born in 1784, there is always the chance he was born a year earlier or wasn't baptised as a baby, but when he was say 2 or 3 years old for some reason?

2) I have heard of Bishops Transcripts, may they contain the dates missing from the Parish Register and can they be viewed?

The frustrating thing is there is another person researching WAIT's in Yoxall and it seems very likely our tree's are connected, the dates add up and obviously Yoxall was small back then. If I could confirm who EDWARD WAIT's parents were I could instantly add over 100 names to my tree as could the chap who has Wait's from Yoxall in his tree. His tree is available http://www.antonymaitland.com/dolman01.htm#HW

I believe his parents could have been John Wait who died before 1841 and Sarah Wait who appears as a 73year old widow in the 1841 census at Woodmill, Yoxall, thus b abt 1768.

Apparently the family opperated a small Woodmill or timber business so maybe John would have left a Will when he died?

They had other children,  which I hope to find are his brothers and sister.

My Edward Wait may have been their first born, being born in 1784:

1/1. Mary Wait, born 7/1/1787.
1/2. William Wait, born 20/4/1789.
1/3. Martin Wait (20/4/1791),
1/4. Joseph Wait born Yoxall 2/3/1793  ch 31/3/1793
1/5. Hannah Wait, born 5/7/1795.
1/6. Sarah Wait, born 26/11/1797.
1/7. Francis Wait, born 11/5/1800.
1/8. Ellen Wait, born 11/4/1802.
1/9. Ann Wait, born (27/5/1804.
1/10. John Wait, born 4/1/1807.
1/11. Elizabeth Wait, born 1/7/1810.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated, sorry for the long entry, but didn't know how I could make it short without giving all the info I have.

Thanks for reading,
Best Wishes,

Chris Wait

Hi. This is what Genuki has to say on the matter:

Church of England Registers
The register of the parish church of St Peter commences in 1645. The original registers for the period 1645-1786 & 1813-1909 (Bapts), 1682-1915 (Mar) & 1678-1879 (Bur), and Banns for the period 1823-1883 are deposited at Staffordshire Record Office.
Bishops Transcripts, 1664-1871 (with gaps 1665-67, 1676, 1701, 1705-07, 1771-81 & 1870) are deposited at Lichfield Record Office.

So you might be in luck with the bishops transcripts and they might have the bit you want.
The familysearch site claims to have this on microfilm so you could try the family history centre at Leicester which would be a bit closer for you. I assume you have looked at the IGI already  but the microfilm may have some entries that they missed/couldn't be bothered to try to read. If it is handier you could get the parish records sent there too and search a bit wider.

Hi Chris,

Just making contact with you.  I have been recently researching the Wait family line of my family.

I am directly descended from Elizabeth Wait, born 1810, who was the youngest child of John Wait and Sarah Cantrell.  She married Abraham Ward, who originated from Baswich near Stafford, in Yoxall in 1842.  They lived in Marston, near Stafford, and Abraham was a shoemaker.

My family still live in Stafford.

I was really interested to find out about Joseph Wait and the Methodist Chapel at Woodmill.  I am planning a visit in the next week or so.

Kind regards,
Susie

Hi Chris,

I have had a look on Findmypast for baptisms at Yoxall. I don't know if this is your Edward Wait but I have found the following baptism:

Edward Wait 14th July 1776 in Yoxall to parents John and Sarah.

A copy of the original record is provided but doesn't give a place of abode. I have tried to find a burial for Edward Wait in Yoxall but haven't found anything.

If the above is a child of John and Sarah, it means she had children between 1776 and 1810, a period of 34 years. Perhaps John married twice and the first Sarah died, then remarried another Sarah?

Could be two separate families but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Kindest regards,

ALewis

Hi Chris,

I have found two other baptisms in the 1760s to a John and Sarah Wait in Yoxall:

Anna/Anne baptised 28/09/1766
William baptised 16/11/1769

So it looks like there are two separate families.

I hope this helps.
