Still need help please
« on: Friday 16 June 06 20:16 BST (UK) »
On my gt gt grandfathers (Richard Charles Wilkinson) marriage certificate it states he was of legal age, so I assume he was over 21. His father's name was William and they were both shipwrights in Hull.

On the IGI I can find a Richard Charles Christened in Thorne 1823 (Don't know why he would be in Thorne) and also Richard Christened in Hull 1825, this just has the mothers name of Jane. I have found a marriage for William John Wilkinson and Jane Gray in 1827 in Hull.

How can I tell if I find the correct Richard? With a name like Wilkinson in Hull, there are lots of Williams and Richards. I don't want to end up following the wrong line but how will I know? I can't find them on the 1841 census and Richard was married in 1846 so he wouldn't appear with his parents after that.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Richard married Jane Gibson in 1846 in Hull, she was a minor. I have their marriage certificate but it doesn't really help me find Richards parents.
I have found Richard and Jane's children on the census records but need to find Richards parents to get me further back with this line.

There's an entry on the IGI stating:

Born 1823 Kingston Upon Hull, Yorks
Christening 24 Jan 1823 Thorne, Yorkshire
Death 1878 Kingston Upon Hull, Yorks
Spouse Jane Gibson
Marriage 1 Feb 1846 Kingston Upon Hull

This is a patron submission and not therefore sourced.
However, someone has evidently traced him before you and reached similar conclusions!

Thanks. I know the person who sent this in and it was guess work really. Thats why I wanted to know how I can tell when I have the correct person. It could be right but somehow I don't think so.

Hi Otters, After a lot of looking on the 1841 Hull census, I have found a Richard Wilkinson, 15 year old apprentice at an address of Jenning Street, Patrington, born in the same county.  I wonder if this is the one. Has anyone else come up with this ?? please let me know, regards, Maurice Hamson(wife nee Pauline Wilkinson)
